Sadhotra visits flash flood hit Jammu North

JAMMU, Aug 27: National Conference Additional General Secretary and former Minister Mr Ajay Kumar Sadhotra today visited the flash flood affected areas of Jammu North and took stock of the widespread damages caused by the deluge.
Mr Sadhotra visited Roop Nagar Colony, Bhawani Nagar, Shivalik Puram and adjoining areas Jammu Municipal Wards 62 and 37 where incessant rains and flash floods wreaked havoc, causing immense loss to public and private property besides roads and other infrastructure. He interacted with the affected residents, listened to their ordeal and assured them of full support by the Jenab Omar Abdullah led government. The National Conference will endeavor for getting their genuine grievances redressed, he added. He expressed sympathies with Jyoti Parkash Khajuria whose house has been fully collapsed and fell down in the Nallah in Sector No. 2 of Roop Nagar.
Expressing serious concern over the absence of a protection wall on a major nallah passing through Roop Nagar Colony, the former Minister said that the gushing water flow had damaged several houses, leaving residents in a precarious situation. He took strong note of the collapse of a double-storey house in the colony and conveyed solidarity with the house owner who has suffered an irreparable loss. He demanded immediate relief and financial assistance for reconstruction of the collapsed house.
Mr Sadhotra also spoke to the Vice Chairman Jammu Development Authority (JDA) regarding the damages. He raised the pressing issue of constructing a protection wall and repairing of all the roads leading to Roop Nagar and highlighted the plight of the affected family. The Vice Chairman assured Mr Sadhotra that the JDA would explore possibilities of providing assistance to the house owner.
In Bhawani Nagar, the National Conference Additional General Secretary called upon the Forest Department to take urgent measures to renovate and widen the Nallah passing through the park developed by it, so that flooding did not take place in future in Bhawani Nagar. He also urged the administration to undertake restoration and repair of the roads damaged by the flood waters in different areas of Jammu North Assembly Constituency. He also visited Shivalik Puram where the road has been damaged and water has gone to the houses due to which their belongings, ration and other essentials have been damaged. He also demanded that the Nallah of Shivalik Puram be widened so that in future the water does not enter the residents of the area.
Referring to today's visit of Chief Minister Jenab Omar Abdullah to flood-hit areas of Jammu, Mr Sadhotra said this has rekindled a ray of hope among the rain-affected people and would pave the way for fast-track restoration works like water, power and roads, Nallahs, lanes and drains.
National Conference leader disclosed to the people that former Chief Minister and National Conference President Dr. Farooq Abdullah has been closely monitoring the situation of Jammu and is in regular touch with him about the sufferings of the people. "National Conference stands shoulder to shoulder with the sufferers in this hour of exigency caused due to torrential rains," Mr Sadhotra said, while demanding immediate pumping out of accumulated water from inundated colonies and timely distribution of relief. He also sought three months' free ration for the flood-affected families to mitigate their hardships. Expressing deep grief over the tragic deaths due to a landslide on the Mata Vaishno Devi route, the former Minister conveyed heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and prayed for eternal peace to the departed souls and ask the Shri Vaishno Devi Shrine Board to stop the yatra immediately till weather is clear to save the further loss of human lives. Others who accompanied Mr Sadhotra are Raghubir Singh District President Jammu, Uttam Deep Sharma, Rakesh Kumar Kapahi, Sandeep Singh Manhas, Bal Krishan Sharma, Mohan Lal Gupta, Nand Lal Bhat, Ashok Sharma, Jasmeet Singh and Devender Singh.
At Shivalik Puram Janipur Colony, Mr Sonu Gutpa President, Mr Sandeep Mahajan Vice President, Mr Vicky Dogra General Secretary, Mr Munish Sharma, Sanjay Mehra, Committee Members of Shivalik Sewa Dal also met National Conference Additional General Secretary and brought to his notice the problems created by flood havoc in the area. Former Minister appreciated the efforts of Shivalik Sewa Dal for helping the flood hit people and arranging their safe stay and food.
