KVK Reasi educates farmers on commercial cultivation of turmeric in monkeys menace areas

Reasi, Sept 12: Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Reasi under the aegis of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Jammu (SKUAST-J) educated the farmers on the commercial cultivation of turmeric here at KVK Reasi campus.KVK Reasi is working under the dynamic stewardship of Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, Prof.B.N.Tripathi and able guidance of Director Extension (DE), Prof.Amrish Vaid of SKUAST-J. Chief Scientist & Head of Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Reasi, Dr. Banarsi Lal said that crops such as vegetables,fruits,cereals etc. of some pockets of the district are badly affected by the monkeys menace.
He said that turmeric crops has an immense potential in the distt. and the farmers of the monkeys prone areas can fetch more returns by growing it of commercial level.
He added that turmeric is a viable alternative crop in monkeys’ prone areas and there is a need to boost the crop especially in the monkey prone areas.He suggested that farmers should grow it of commercial level by following the scientific guidelines so that its production and productivity can be enhanced. He also discussed on the disease and nutrient management practices in the turmeric.
He stressed on the adoption of natural farming practices by which the farmers can reduce the cost of cultivation.
He also discussed on the soil health management and guided farmers for the preparation of organic formulations such as beejamrit, jeevamrit, ghanjeevamrit,neem astra etc.
He also guided farmers on the mulching practices in turmeric. He said that turmeric has numerous value addition opportunities owing to its widespread use as the spice in food and beverages and as antioxidants in medicines.
He informed that turmeric rhizomes after processing are used as the condiments ,a dye and as an aromatic stimulant in several medicines,confectionery and food industry etc.He also informed that turmeric rhizomes contain curcumin, a phenolic compound which is used in traditional and Ayurvedic medicines having antibacterial,antfungal,antiparasitc and antioinflammatory agent besides anticancer and antimutagen properties.He narrated that turmeric is helpful to improve the health status of human beings by improving the immunity of the body. He stressed on the formulation Farmers Producer Organisations(FPOs) of organic turmeric growers to boost the turmeric production and increase the income of farmers.He also stressed on the branding,packaging and marketing of organic turmeric. By observing the results of successful organic turmeric growers many new farmers are coming forward to grow organic turmeric . He said that by the value addition in turmeric some new income and employment opportunities can be created especially among the rural youths of the area.
