Early Times Report
RS PURA, Feb 14: The Government Degree College R.S. Pura successfully hosted the Campus Bird Count 2026 on 14 February 2026 as part of the globally recognized Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC). The initiative aimed at documenting and celebrating avian biodiversity and encouraged students, faculty members, and nature enthusiasts to actively participate in birdwatching and data collection, thereby contributing to global ornithological research.
The event was organized by the Department of Environmental Sciences in collaboration with the College Eco-Club. It provided participants with hands-on experience in bird identification, data recording, and an understanding of the importance of avian conservation. During the survey, twenty-five bird species were documented within the college campus, and the observations were uploaded to the international eBird database, supporting worldwide efforts to monitor bird populations and migration patterns.
While speaking on the occasion, Prof. (Dr.) Preetpal Kour, Principal of the College, stated that the Campus Bird Count not only fosters ecological awareness among students but also contributes valuable scientific data that aids bird conservation efforts. Dr. Anupama Pandotra HoD Zoology Department also encouraged students and faculty members to actively participate in such meaningful initiatives.
The Campus Bird Count is an annual sub-event of the Great Backyard Bird Count, a global citizen science initiative launched by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and Bird Count India. The global event is being conducted from 13 to 16 February 2026, inviting bird enthusiasts from across the world to observe and report bird sightings.
