Early Times Report
JAMMU, Apr 12: With the aim of sensitizing the general public to the growing burden and serious consequences of cardiovascular diseases, Head Department of Cardiology GMCH Jammu Dr Sushil Sharma held a day-long cardiac awareness cum health check up camp at Dogra Brahmin Pratinidhi Sabha Parade, Jammu on the eve of auspicious occasion of Birth anniversary of Bhagwan Shri Parshu Ram Ji . The initiative was thoughtfully designed to educate individuals particularly the elderly about the risk factors, early warning signs, and preventive strategies associated with heart-related ailments.
Addressing the gathering, Dr. Sushil highlighted that while aging is an inevitable biological process, deterioration in heart health is not unavoidable. Advancing age brings several physiological changes, including stiffening of arteries, reduced cardiac efficiency, and increased susceptibility to metabolic disorders. Despite these changes, he stressed that lifestyle choices play a decisive role in determining cardiovascular health. Adopting simple, consistent habits can significantly reduce the risk of heart disease, improve quality of life, and support independence in later years. Emphasizing the importance of physical activity, Dr. Sushil described it as a cornerstone of heart health. Regular moderate exercise enhances circulation, strengthens cardiac function, regulates blood pressure, and helps maintain a healthy body weight. Activities such as brisk walking, light cycling, yoga, and gentle strength training not only improve endurance but also enhance balance and reduce the risk of falls. He noted that even 30 minutes of daily physical activity can deliver substantial health benefits, adding that consistency is more important than intensity.
Discussing dietary habits, he underscored the role of balanced nutrition in maintaining cardiovascular health. A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, and lean proteins supports vascular health and reduces inflammation. Limiting salt intake helps control blood pressure, while reducing saturated fats and processed foods contributes to maintaining healthy cholesterol levels. Adequate hydration is equally important for proper circulation and overall well-being. Including fiber-rich and antioxidant-rich foods further strengthens heart health.Dr. Sushil also stressed the importance of maintaining an optimal body weight. Excess weight places additional strain on the heart and increases the risk of hypertension, diabetes, and other metabolic conditions. Even modest weight reduction can significantly improve cardiovascular parameters. He advocated for gradual and sustainable lifestyle changes rather than restrictive diets.
Highlighting the role of mental well-being, Dr. Sushil noted that stress, anxiety, and social isolation can adversely affect heart health, particularly among the elderly. He encouraged individuals to adopt stress management techniques such as meditation, deep breathing, spiritual engagement, and involvement in hobbies. Maintaining social connections with family and community members also contributes positively to emotional and cardiac well-being. Sleep, he added, plays a crucial role in cardiovascular health. Poor sleep quality is associated with hypertension, irregular heart rhythms, and metabolic disturbances. Establishing a consistent sleep routine, avoiding heavy meals before bedtime, and limiting screen exposure at night can significantly improve sleep quality. Early diagnosis and management of sleep disorders such as sleep apnea are also essential.
Regular medical check-ups are vital for early detection and management of conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, and high cholesterol. During the camp, participants underwent basic health screenings including blood pressure, blood sugar, and body mass index assessments. Individuals identified as at risk were counseled on necessary lifestyle modifications and advised to seek timely medical follow-up, He Said
In his concluding remarks, Dr. Sharma reiterated that strengthening the aging heart does not require complex interventions but a commitment to balanced living. Regular physical activity, a nutritious diet, stress management, adequate sleep, and avoidance of harmful habits together form a strong defense against cardiovascular disease. By embracing these simple measures, individuals can lead healthier, more active, and fulfilling lives in their later years
