Early Times Report
MALIGAON, Apr 17: In a unique and collaborative effort to strengthen voter awareness and democratic participation, the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR), through its heritage line Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR), partnered with the Office of the District Election Officer, Darjeeling to organise a "Mega SVEEP" (Systematic Voters' Education and Electoral Participation) programme on 17th April 2026. The initiative was aimed at encouraging informed and inclusive participation in the upcoming General Election to the West Bengal Legislative Assembly (WBLA) 2026.
As part of the programme, a major phase of activities was hosted at the iconic Darjeeling Railway Station. The station premises witnessed enthusiastic participation from railway officials, district authorities and members of the public, all united in promoting the importance of every vote in a vibrant democratic setup.
The event began with the arrival of distinguished guests, followed by a traditional welcome ceremony including the offering of khada and lighting of the ceremonial lamp, symbolising awareness and enlightenment among voters. The programme was further enriched by a captivating cultural performance presented by a Sherpa cultural team, reflecting the rich local heritage while reinforcing the spirit of civic responsibility.
A signature campaign was also organised at the venue, drawing active participation from citizens and officials who pledged their commitment towards ethical and informed voting. The highlight of the event was the flagging off of the special "Democracy Express" - a dedicated DHR train carrying the message of voter awareness. The train journey from Darjeeling to the iconic Batasia Loop symbolised the movement of democratic values across communities, effectively reaching both residents and tourists.
By leveraging the heritage and popularity of the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, this initiative successfully transformed a scenic journey into a powerful medium of public awareness. The collaboration between NFR and the District Election Authorities underscores a shared commitment to ensuring maximum voter participation and strengthening the democratic fabric of the nation.
Northeast Frontier Railway remains dedicated to supporting national initiatives that promote public awareness, social responsibility and community engagement.
