Common between Bhim, Fidel Castro
6/6/2009 12:32:51 AM

That the Panthers Party does not believe in the politics of organisational election became known when the party avoided encouraging party leaders for contesting the poll for party posts recently. Once again Prof. Bhim Singh was elected unanimously as chairman of the party. Since the birth of the party years ago Bhim Singh has been functioning as its chairman. A senior party leader says that since "ours is a small organisation we prefer electing office bearers without a contest." In fact Chairman appoints other office bearers and till date no party leader has ever dared to oppose the chairman's selection.Years ago one close associate of Bhim Singh, Udhay Chand, had raised a banner of alarm but he lost his political moorings despite the fact that he had powerful organisational capacities. Well nobody can question Bhim Singh's political acumen. He is an institution and it is under his guidance and chairmanship that the Panthers Par ty was able to win four Assembly seats in 2002 enabling it to share power with the Congress-PDP ruling alliance. Panthers Party had outclassed the BJP which could win only one seat.Even in 2008 election the Panthers won three seats. Two MLAs belonging to the Panthers Party had been inducted in the council of ministers headed by Mufti Mohammad Sayeed. In fact Harsh Dev Singh's role as an education minister had earned laurels for him. But when Ghulam Nabi Azad took over as Chief Minister Panthers party MLAs were not given berth in the council of ministers. It was not that Azad was opposed to Panthers inclusion in the ministry. He wanted Harsh Dev Singh as Education Minister again but Bhim Singh sabotaged it as he wanted berth in the cabinet which Azad did not accept. Bhim Singh may be thinking of having become as indispensable as Fiedel Castro or Yaser Arafat but if he believes in democratic traditions and practices he should encourage holding organisational elections every year so that those dedicated party leaders who have never got a chance to work as office bearers were elected to various party posts. If Bhim Singh has some fears let he seek support to an amendment to the party constitution so that he gets elected as chairman for his entire life. The other posts of vice chairman, general secretaries, secretaries, treasurer were elected. Panthers Party has been trying to expand its areas of influence. It is keen to register its presence in the state. Though it has bases in the Jammu region it did not feel shy of fielding eight to 10 candidates in the Kashmir valley in 2002 and 2008.It has the potential to become a political force to reckon with provided its chairman abandons what is called political pranks.
