Women's Day celebrated across Jammu region

JAMMU, Mar 8: On the occasion of 100th International Women's Day, several functions were organised to celebrate the day across Jammu region today.
To mark the day, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Mahila Morcha under its president Sakina Bano, held a function at party headquarters which was attended by a large number of women activists of the party belonging to different areas of Jammu city. BJP State President Shamsher Singh Manhas, who also shared dais with the Morcha leaders, said that party has all along worked for the upliftment and welfare of the women. He said that BJP was the first political party which advocated political reservation for women in the country. It was in this context that the party granted 33 per cent reservation to women in its organizational setup and has declared to support any bill which is tabled in the parliament.
In her address, BJP Mahila Morcha President Sakina Bano said that a woman is a multi faceted human being as she performs various responsibilities in different phases of her life but still majority of the population do not give her the due respect, which is condemnable. On the occasion, Mahila Morcha President announced that former Corporator Priya Sethi will be the next General Secretary of the women wing of the aprty.
In another function related to International Women's Day, Government Degree College Bishnah organised a 'Painting Competition' on the theme 'Indian Women -Past and Present'.
Meetu, Neelam & Shruti were adjudged as Ist, 2nd & 3rd respectively in the Painting Competition and the prizes were distributed by Principal of the College, Prof Veena Pandita.
In the programme, Suraj Prakash, a student of B.A Part-II, recited a poem 'Nari Shakti'.
Prominent women of Bishnah area including former ZEPO (Zonal Education Planning Officer) Bishnah Sudarshan Kumari, former tehsil Social Welfare Officer Bishnah, Mohinder Devi, Vimla Motten and Lecturer of Government Higher Secondary School (Boys) Bishnah Vimla Devi. To commemorate the day, Jay Kay Women Welfare Society (JKWWS) held a societal-awakening function. The theme of the function was women empowerment and awareness, which is one of the major issue adopted by the society.
Being philanthropist and social worker, its founder and Executive Director, TR Sharma believed that 'the hands that shakes the cradle, rules the world'.
Addressing the gathering, Chairperson JKWWS, Janaki Devi stressed on the empowerment and awareness of the women so that they could enjoy equal status against their male counterparts. The function was attended among others by Rita Jitender, Haffiza Muzaffar, Shakuntla Joshi, Prof Sunita Zalpuri, Advocate Surinder Kaur, Sister Rosema and President Gandhi Global Family SP Verma.
Youth Movement For Peace (YMP) observed International Women's Day by organizing an awareness programme for women at Village Makwal (near border line) 24 kms from here. The program is all about the role and status of women in the present era.
Speaking on the occasion, Chairman, YMP Vikas Sharma said, "A better society is formed only when the men and women walk together in each and every sphere of life. Behind every successful man, there is a woman."
100th international women's day was also organized in the premises of Gandhi Memorial College of Education, Raipur Bantalab, Jammu. The programme started with the inaugural speech of the administrator ML Gulabi in which he highlighted the importance and role of women in this challenging era. In the first session extempore lectures were delivered by the members of the staff. Everybody participated vibrantly and presented their views in an effective manner.
Creative session was held in the second phase where activity like decoration of corners was organized in which the staff actively particpated. In the end the program was concluded by a word of the principal Prof Kusum Tiku.
To commemorate the 100th international women day, National Service Scheme, University of Jammu, organized 12th Prof. BD Sharma Memorial Inter-departmental / Inter-collegiate debate on campus on the topic "With Opening up of the Indian Economy Women's Participation in Development has increased".
In the debate competition, 24 teams with 48 participants from different colleges participated and put forth different arguments for and against the topic.
Prof Rita Jatinder was the chief guest and Prof Naresh Chadha, Chairman, NSS, Campus presided over the function and distributed the prizes among the winners.
Earlier, Prof Jasbir Singh, NSS, Programme Coordinator welcomed the participants while vote of thanks was presented by Dr Vishav Raksha, Programme Officer, NSS, JU. Government MAM College also celebrated Internati-onal Women's Day. On the occasion, Chairperson, State Women Commission Shameem Firdous, was the Chief Guest while Dean Academic Affairs, JU Prof NA Ganai was the guest of honour. Speaking on the occasion, Shameem Firdous highlighted the important issues of women and the steps being taken by the Commission to improve their status and make them aware of their rights.
Addressing the gathering, Principal, Prof MS Baloria asserted that International Women's Day is a major day of global celebration for the economic and social achievements of Women.
A panel discussion was also held in which the faculty and students interacted and raised queries to the Resource persons with regard to women issues.
A function to celebrate Women's Day was organised by J&K Women Development Corporation in collaboration with Women Study Centre Gandhi Nagar at Gove-rnment College for Women, Gandhi Nagar wherein Minister for Social Welfare Sakina Itoo was the chief guest.
Speaking on the occasion Sakina Itoo said that significant change is desirable in the mindset of people towards women, as there is growing consciousness in the society that progress of the nation will be elusive unless the fair sex is fully empowered.
Minister said that women's role in decision making and development process cannot be undermined
"Unless you empower the women how can this society prosper and progress" the Minister asked while emphasising the crucial role of the women in nation building. Later the Minister distributed cheques worth Rs11.50 lakh among the Self Help Groups for establishing their own Income generating units.
Secretary, Social Welfare, MS Khan said that every citizen must honour the laws enacted to provide protection and also to achieve objectives of development by involving women in the process.
Managing Director, National Minorities Develo-pment and Finance Corpo-ration Abrar Ahmad has assured all possible help for socio economic upliftment of women, particularly those belong to weaker sections of the society.
Women's Day was also organized by J&K State Commission for Women in collaboration with Hindu-stan Coca Cola Beverages Pvt Ltd at Government College for Women, Parade wherein Deputy Chief Minister Tara Cahnd was the chief guest.
Addressing the gathering, Tara Chand said that the government has launched several schemes for the educational upliftment and empowerment of women in the state adding that the government is determined to provide full assistance to the women in the field of education to improve their talent.
He said that our country has given birth to great women leaders like former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, President of India Pratiba Devi Singh Patil, Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar and several others. On the occasion Chairperson, J&K State Commission for Women, Shamim Firdous submitted charter of 8 demands to Deputy Chief Minister, which include Women Reservation Bill, which is going to be passed by the Parliament soon, should be extended to the state, Family Courts act should also be extended or our own Act should come in force and Domestic Violence Act should be passed by the Assembly during this session
Besides 400 women including NGOs students and civil society, Aids Control Society also participated.
To mark the day, Shivalik College of Education, Udhampur today took out a rally in city. The rally was organized by college in association with NSS unit of Jammu University. The rally organised by college to mark the International Women's Day, covered main bazaars of the town and later culminated at Deputy Commissioner Office . The participants carried placards denouncing female foeticide and were raising slogans to save girl child .Students also visited different government offices and distributed leaflets with slogans to save women.Speaking on the occasion Dr Vikram Gulati and Munish Gulati Chairman of education college highlighted importance of the day and stressed the need for empowerment of women and safeguarding of their fundamental rights.
