JAMMU, Apr 19: With the mercury hovering around 42 degrees Celsius in many parts of Jammu region for last one week, the School Education Department is all set to revisit its academic calendar, making changes to protect children from the harsh sun.

If sources are to be believed, the department may reduce school timings by an hour besides announcing summer vacations two to three weeks in advance.

Meanwhile, the Director School Education Jammu today ordered new timings for government as well as private schools in summer zone, Jammu.

As per a notification of the Director School Education Jammu, the school timing in the Government, as well as private schools, in summer zone Jammu, shall be observed 8 a.m to 2 p.m from April 20, 2010, in view of prevailing heat conditions, till further orders.

Reports from several private schools in city premises said that they have made changes in academic calendar and school timings have been changed because of the unbearable heat. “A few schools which work for the entire month of April, they have advanced the vacation by two weeks for junior students,” said sources.

It may be mentioned here that the temperature was six to eight degrees above normal in most districts of Jammu region. The Met department has also issued heat wave warnings in days to come.

"For the last three days when the sun strokes suddenly became unbearable, children were at home. It is not good for children to come out in such hot weather. The schools should either declare vacations for some days or cut short school timings so that the children don’t face any problem,” Shamili Sharma, a parent said.

The School Education Department has also asked the Chief Education Officers to monitor the timing and initiate action against the violators. “The department has asked the CEOs to constitute special squads to keep a tight vigil over the functioning of the schools vis-à-vis working hours of the schools. Any violations with regard to school timings would invite a stern action against the school management,” maintained sources.

Sources said the department may announce summer vacations in the first or second week of May. In Jammu region, vacations in schools falling in summer zone are generally declared in the first week of June.

When contacted, Zahida Khan, Director School Education Jammu, said, “Since the temperature in Jammu region has witnessed sudden rise, we have decided to change the school timings from tomorrow. As far as announcement of advance vacations in schools is concerned, we are still looking for weather improvement. If the harsh heat wave continues to hit the region, we may think for advance vacations this year.”
