BJP protests hike in power tariff
5/5/2010 11:21:15 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, May 5: To register protest against the proposed hike in the electricity tariff and imposition of unscheduled power cuts, BJP District Jammu activists, under its president Rajesh Gupta, took out a protest march from party headquarters.
The march culminated outside the PDD office at Parade, where the effigy of the Chief Minister, who holds the portfolio of Power Department, was burnt.
Addressing the party activists, Rajesh Gupta expressed grave concern over the proposed hike from the existing rupees 40 to rupees 200 for one Kilowatt. Under this plan, a minimum of rupees 200 will have to be paid by every consumer. He said this high jump of 500 per cent increase by the department can not be justified in any way. Rajesh said the people are already finding it difficult to manage their monthly budget due to price rise of essential food items and this all time hike has created more problems for them. Rajesh Gupta said that on one hand the government has hiked the tariff, on the other it has failed to ensure regular supply of electricity to the consumers. A minimum of five hours cuts is imposed to the areas which are fully metered and those which are still without meteres there is power cut of 13 hours in these days of scorching summers. The power cuts of such long durations have badly affected the housewives, students, patients and aged people.
He said the revenue generation by the PDD is more from Jammu region while the department is more concerned for regular supply to the valley, which is yet another glaring example of discrimination with the Jammu region.
Charging the State Electricity Regulatory Commission of working as per the wishes of the government, Gupta said that the BJP had submitted objections to this body some few months ago opposing the proposal to make hike but it seems that the same were thrown into dustbin. He asked the government to abandon the idea of hiking the electricity tarrif and work sincerely to ensure regular supply of electricity to the consumers in Jammu province.
Suresh Jamwal, Usha Choudhary, Shiv Kumar Gupta, Balbir Ram, Jaideep Sharma, Vikram Randhawa, Karan Singh, Vinay Gupta, Sureshta Jamwal and Amrik Singh.among those who took part in the protest demonstration.
