IAS Result: Jammu boys prove they can compete with anyone
5/9/2010 12:00:14 AM

RUSTAM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, May 8: The youth of the shabbily-treated Jammu province have established that given an opportunity they could successfully compete with anyone in the country, leave alone the privileged Kashmiri youth. Had the authorities appreciated the Jammu youth and Jammu talent even once, the results would have been spectacular and the boys and girls of Jammu province would have surely displayed their worth. They are highly talented, hardworking and methodical. There should be no doubt about it. That the Jammu youth have been competing successfully at national level without any patronage speaks for itself. Their splendid success must make the authorities and the vested interests in Kashmir and Jammu to sit up and ponder over what they had been thinking about the people of Jammu province. That the Jammu youth is competent enough to compete with all others at all-India level could be seen from the fact that three of them qualified the prestigious and highly tough India Administration Services Examination this year. They are Udham Das of Pukharni (Sunderbani), Vinod Kumar of Kathua and Arashdeep Singh from Pakistan-occupied-Jammu. All the three belong to the remote areas and all the three belong to the lower middle class.
Udham Das is a KAS officer presently serving the state as Deputy Register Co-operative Societies. Post-Graduate in History from the University of Jammu, Udham Das has got selected in the Indian Revenue Services (IRS). Originally from Bagh, Arashdeep Singh is Post-Graduate from the Agriculture University RS Pura and presently working as Poultry Extension Officer in the Animal Husbandry Department. Undoubtedly, Udham, Vinod and Arashdeep have brought laurels to the people of Jammu province, who have been facing worst kind of discrimination at all levels and in all spheres since 1947.
A young Doctor from Kupwara district, Dr Shah Faisal, along with three other boys from Kashmir, has also brought laurels to Kashmir. Dr Faisal has secured first position in the country. In fact, he is the first boy from the state who has achieved such a splendid success. It is no wonder that Governor NN Vohra invited Dr Faisal and his mother Mubena to Raj Bhawan to greet and congratulate them. The manner in which the State Governor greeted Dr Faisal should make those denouncing India change their attitude towards their country that makes no distinction between man and man on the ground of religion and impartially recognizes and reward merit.
It is hoped that the State Governor, who found time from his busy schedule to greet and congratulate Dr Faisal, would come to Jammu; invite Udham, Vinod and Arashdeep to the Raj Bhawan; and greet and congratulate them as well. Such a gesture on his part would go a long way in making the people of Jammu believe that there are elements in the establishment who do recognize the Jammu merit and the talented Jammu youth. After all, all the three Jammu boys have worked hard, overcame heavy odds and displayed their talent and merit.
The success of the three Jammu boys should also open the eyes of those who do not consider any Jammu-based academician worthy of heading the Jammu Central University and who have been, according to reports, contemplating to impose such controversial persons as Prof Amitabh Mattoo on the Central University as its first Vice-Chancellor.
The success of the three Jammu boys in the Indian Administrative Services should also be construed as a slap on the face of those who have been shamelessly hailing the likes of Prof Mattoo and dismissing the Jammu-based academicians with contempt saying there is none in Jammu who could be considered for the position of the Vice-Chancellor of the Jammu Central University. Credit goes to former Vice-Chancellor of Jammu University Prof MR Puri who has hit the nail on the head by saying that all was well with the University of Jammu when the Jammu-based academicians headed it and that things got deteriorated when the outsiders were imposed on the University of Jammu. The authorities must pay heed to the sane counsel of Prof Puri.
