MIET celebrates World Telecom & Information Society Day | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, May 17: Model Institute of Engineering and Technology (MIET), Jammu in collaboration with the Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (IETE) Jammu Center, celebrated the "World Telecommunication and Information Society Day" here today. The underlying theme for celebrating this day was "BETTER CITY, BETTER LIFE WITH ICTs." To mark the occasion, a larger number of activities including a seminar, collage making and Rangoli competition were held. The function began with the welcome address by Prof. S K Sharma, Principal MIET. Dr Ankur Gupta, Joint Director MIET spoke on the relevance of World Telecom Day and hoped that the students at MIET would acquire the necessary skills to participate in the exponential growth in the telecom sector in the coming years. RK Kaul, Principal General Manager BSNL, J&K, who was Chief Guest on the occasion, highlighted the importance of telecommunications and gave out the efforts BSNL is putting up to meet the aspirations of the users. He also announced that BSNL would be happy to donate some old telecom equipment to MIET for demonstration purposes, so that students can better appreciate the evolution of technology in the telecommunication space. Joy Ganjoo, Chairman IETE Jammu, encouraged the students and gave details of the activities of the IETE in this region. Prof Praveen Lehana Honorary Secretary IETE, Prof Susheel Sharma, Honorary Treasurer and Vijay Sharma, Member IETE were also present on the occasion. The event was managed by the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering under the guidance of Head of Department Prof Vishal Puri. Later around 10 students of the ECE department presented seminars on the emerging trends in telecommunications and were awarded cash prizes and certificates. World Telecom Day is celebrated to commemorate the beginning of the telecom era in the world. 145 years ago, on May 17, 1865, twenty European countries met in Paris and formed an organization called 'International Telegraph Union' to give boost to the telegraph technology as the telephones were not invented by then. On May 17, 1969, this Union decided to celebrate 17th May as the World Telecom Day, primarily to commemorate its origin in 1865. Since 2005, this day has been renamed as 'World Telecommunication and Information Society Day and has been celebrated in most of the countries by way of organizing various activities connected with Telecommunications.
