Schools to observe summer break a week in advance | Weathermen advise precautions from heat waves | | ARTEEV SHARMA EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, May 24: With mercury hovering around 43 degrees Celsius in many parts of Jammu region for last one week, the Directorate of School Education Jammu has decided to close all schools (government as well as private) for summer break a week in advance. Though the formal announcement in this regard has not been made so far, the summer vacations in all schools of Jammu region are likely to be observed from June 1. The Early Times in its edition on April 20 had reported that the Directorate of School Education was planning to revisit its academic calendar and had made certain changes to protect children from the harsh sun. Confirming the news report, Zahida Khan, Director School Education Jammu said, "We have decided to declare summer vacations a week in advance keeping in view the rising temperature." She however maintained, "We have yet not finalized the date for announcing the summer break but it would definitely be announced a week in advance in view of prevailing hot and humid conditions. Earlier, it was decided to observe summer vacations from June 8 but the prevailing harsh conditions are forcing us to revisit our academic calendar." The Director further said, "Our teachers are also performing double duties as they are busy in Census work also. Early Vacations would definitely provide a relief to them." Meanwhile, heat wave continued unabated in Jammu with mercury hovering above the 43 degree Celsius mark at many places for the last couple of days. The weathermen has issued an advisory to the people especially school children not to move out during daytime and avoiding working in the sun, wearing protective clothing and hats, and applying sunscreens. According to Chief Scientist Agrometeorology, Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology (SKUAST), Dr M K Khushu, said, "There seems no relief for the people of Jammu region as the temperature may rise further in days to come." The Chief Scientist informed, "On Saturday (May 22), Jammu region had witnessed this season's highest temperature when it was recorded at 44.2 degree Celsius while yesterday it was 42 degree Celsius. The slight reduction was witnessed due to rainfall in Kashmir Valley which occurred after Western Disturbances hit the Valley. Jammu continued to swelter under heat waves as today's maximum temperature recorded at 43.6 degree C." The Met officials however, maintained the region had no relief from heat as the daytime temperatures stayed mostly above 42 degrees in Jammu last week. They also ruled out any possibility of any immediate relief from heat waves. Severe heat swept the region, with most places recording the season's highest maximum so far. Dr Khushu said, "We have advised the people especially school children not to move outside during daytime as the intensity of ultra violet rays had been recorded in the region for the past few days."
