JU VC turns critical to demand of KIMT chairman | | | Mishu Gupta
JAMMU, June 6: The Vice Chancellor, University of Jammu (JU), Prof Varun Sahni today turned critical to the demand for recognition to the degrees obtained by the students through study centres of various universities under the distance mode as raised by the chairman of Kawa Group of Institutes, M S Katoch. The VC maintained that JU would strictly follow the guidelines of University Grants Commission (UGC) and Distance Education Council (DEC), besides the SRO issued by the State Government in this regard. Pertinently, the occasion was annual day of Kawa Institute of Management and Technology and the venue was General Zorawar Singh Auditorium, University of Jammu (JU). According to sources, visibly angry Prof Sahni took strong note of Katoch's statement for raising such a demand in his presence and that too in his den. Sources added that Prof Sahni's strong reaction to this demand also put Dr Farooq Abdullah, chief guest of the annual day function, on back foot as even he also expressed displeasure over the mushroom growth of illegal study centres of various universities in the State and called for stringent policy to check the same. It is pertinent to mention here that last year, the Higher Education Department of the State Government had issued a list of illegal study centres of various Universities operating in the State and cautioned the students not to take admission in those institutions and spoil their careers. Further, the SRO issued by the State Government in the year 2005 clearly states that the degrees obtained by the students from such study centres under the distance mode is not valid for purpose of seeking job in State Government departments or for seeking admission in Jammu and Kashmir Universities for the pursuing higher education.
