"While Tsering Youthog became the first Indian women climber, along with two others, to scale the formidable peak, Ram Singh is the first climber from J&K to set his foot on one of the toughest but beautiful peak of the Himalaya," general secretary of Tawi Trekkers, Ram Khajuria told . Ram Singh, an Everester and Youthog were part of the 12-member expedition organized by Indian Mountaineering Foundation (IMF), New Delhi, the apex body for mountaineering in India. The expedition was flagged-off from IMF May 25. The team comprising of six men and an equal number of women mountaineers established base camp on May 30 at Tapovan, at an altitude of over 14000ft, after trekking 26km from Gangotri. Unfolding the story, Ram Singh said, " Giving Route to Camp-1(16500ft) was opened after fixing a rope over a glacier and then negotiating fresh snow at a gradient of 70 degree. Route to Camp-2 (18300ft) involved lot of rock and ice climbing where rope had to be fixed for safety," He added that the most difficult part of the expedition was the route from camp- 3 to the summit wherein a 40ft high vertical ice wall had to be negotiated with double jumarring which was physically and mentally quite demanding. A total length of 2000mtr rope was fixed from the base camp to the summit. "The team faced a snow storm with a wind speed of 150 to 200 km per hour on June eight. Finally, six members of the team including three women scaled the 6545m peak on June 18," informed Tsering Youthog. Ram Singh also had the distinction of scaling the peak directly from Camp-2. Starting for the peak at 9 pm on June 17, he reached the peak after 15 hours and 30 minutes at 12.30 pm the next day on June 18 and then returned to Camp-2 the same day at 10 pm after continuously on his feet for 25 hours. A great feat indeed! accomplished without food and water. The expedition led by Sohrab Gandhi, was the first Indian expedition to scale the peak in an alpine style i.e no porters were engaged and all the support work was done by the members of the team.
