Goa emerges new U-19 football champion in School Games

JAMMU, Sept 25: Last year's quarterfinalists, Goa today emerged as new under-19 champion in the 56th National School Games outplaying fighting Chandigarh in tie-breaker in the final played today at MA Stadium, here.
Remained neck and neck in the allotted 90-minute game, the title clash brought in result only through tie-breaker with Goa making it a 4-2 win to take home the coveted trophy.
Star striker of Chandigarh, T Johny Chand, who earlier made two hat tricks in different matches, looked out of form in the all important game today. However, he was awarded with best player trophy for his exceptional talent.
In the tie-breaker, Agnalo Fernandees, Rakesh Kumar, Manzar Ali and Alber Gonsalves were successfully in penalties from winners Goa. From Chandigarh, Amandeep and I Lolthazula could only convert the penalty kicks into goal while Samieul and Gagandeep missed the target.
Introduced for the first time by the School Games Federation of India (SGFI), the fair play trophy went to Kerela.
In the final and prize distribution function, Minister for Revenue, Raman Bhalla was chief guest, who gave away winners and runners-up trophies as also other individual prizes.
To entertain the participating teams and make it a colourful valedictory function, young students from city schools presented cultural prgramme.
Among others present were Director General DYSS, S A Leharwal and Director DYSS, G M Dar as also host of other senior officers of the Department.
Girls U-19 football tomorrow
Meanwhile, after the successful completion of boys' event, the organizers have shifted their focus towards equally important girls National School Games in under-19 football from September 27 at different venues here.
In all, 15 teams representing different states of the country have confirmed their participation. Two teams from Manipur and Goa have already reported to the hosts, DYSS.
