EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Oct 11: It was on this very day in 1942, the legendry Hindi poet Dr Harivansh Rai Bachchan’s wife Teji gave birth to Amitabh Bachchan, who went on to become the Numero Uno of Indian cinema, as far as domain of acting is concerned.
Today, when Amitabh Bachchan, the Star of Millennium, celebrated his 68th birthday and millions of his admirers across the globe greeted him on this occasion, Jammuites too joined the bandwagon of Big B’s birthday bash
Though Amitabh’s fan clubs had organised the celebrations at various places but the duo Ashok Gupta and Surinder Kumar, owner of famous ‘Amitabh Pan House’ at Residency Road near Raghunath Temple and an auto driver respectively remained the focal point of the celebrations here in Jammu.
Ashok and Surinder, two of Amitabh’s biggest fans, who could also be termed as his look-alikes, along with several others wished the living legend of Indian cinema in specially organised functions at Residency Road and near University of Jammu.
Wishing long and healthy life besides all happiness and more success for their super star in his future Bollywood ventures, a large number of his fans gathered at these places and celebrated birthday of Indian cinema’s ‘demigod’ in their own unique way.
They said that it is a special occasion for us, not less than a festival.
The ‘duplicate’ Amitabhs – Ashok Gupta and Surender Kumar cut the specially prepared cakes and offered it to the visitors and passers. They also distributed sweets to the people on the special day of their icon.
Traffic on ever busy Residency Road came to a stand still as large number of Amitabh followers thronged Ashok’s shop to have their share of cake and sweets.
“The traffic moved at a snail’s pace since many people had assembled near my shop to wish Amitji on his birthday.” said 46 years old Ashok Gupta
Both Ashok and Surinder were specially dressed for the occasion and worshipped posters of Big B before starting their day.
Ashok, who has a hair style almost identical to Amitabh’s, even went to a temple to offer prayers for long life and prosperity of Amitabh Bachchan.
After cutting the cake, Ashok Gupta said I am one of the biggest fans of AB since my childhood and for the last twenty years I celebrate it with close friends and customers.
His pan shop is pasted with larger than life portraits of Big B.
“I have put up Amitabh’s pictures as a token of love and respect for this great actor. May God bless him and he continues to entertain us like he is doing for the last four decades.”
Speaking to Early Times, Ashok informed that it was his love for Bachchan which paved the way to rename the shop, established by his father Kundan Lal in 1960, as ‘Amitabh Pan House’ in 1975.
“I adore him like anything… I never missed a single movie of Amitji till date. Even I observed fast for 7 days when Amitabh got critically injured during the making of ‘Coolie’.” said Ashok
With a glimmer of hope in his eyes, Ashok said, “I have a wish that I could meet the living legend once in my life time.”
Sporting a beard like Bachchan, Surinder, who normally wears his driver’s attire on work, was flaunting a neat suit for the special occasion.
He too prayed for happiness and long life of Amitabh Bachchan.
As Amitabh Bachchan is once again staging a comeback on the small screen, like other ardent fans of Big B, Surinder is also eagerly awaiting to see him host the popular game show ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati’ and entertain the masses like no one does on Television screen.
“The year so far has proved lucky for Amitabh as he won the National Award for best Actor for his role in the film ‘Auro’ and now he is again ready to set the small screen (TV) on fire. All of Amitabh’s fans are excitedly awaiting KBC, launching of which is coinciding with Bachchan’s 68th birthday ”said Surinder
“Amitabh’s birthday this year has fallen in the middle of holy Navratras which is a good omen for his further success. May Maa Bhagwati shower his blessings upon Amitabh.” he added
