Union home ministry downgrades Mufti's security | Annoyed Congress high command | | Syed Junaid Hashmi EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Oct 25: Seemingly annoyed with tough posturing of leaders of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and , Union Home Ministry has downgraded security cover of former Chief Minister Mufti Mohammed Sayeed. Highly placed sources said that Mufti Sayeed is among the seven other VIPs whose security has been downgraded on the directions of Union Home Ministry. They added that all these seven VIPs including PDP Chief Mufti Mohammed Sayeed are not on good terms with Congress especially with Union Home Minister P.Chidambram. Others whose security has been downgraded includes former Samajwadi Party (SP) heavyweight Amar Singh, former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh (UP) Kalyan Singh, Chairman of All India Anti-Terrorist Front (AIATF) M.S.Bitta, former Chief Minister of Assam P.K. Mahanta and Chief Minister of Punjab Parkash Singh Badal. Interestingly, all these VIPs, who have lost part of their posse of security personnel, have one or the other grievance with Congress party. Sources told early times that there are certain leaders, such as former Union home Minister L.K.Advani, Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi and Union New and Renewable Energy Minister Farooq Abdullah, for whom NSG cover is a must, given visible threats to their lives. They added that for some others Black Cat protection is just a status symbol and hence, union home ministry is convinced that NSG should be allowed to concentrate solely on counter-terror. After scrutinizing threat perception of these VIPs, we decided to withdraw about 60 NSG commandos, who were being used to protect above mentioned four VIPs, which can now be used for anti-terrorism activities, sources confirmed. Rebuffing the allegation that the security cover has been withdrawn only for political reasons, union home ministry officials maintain said that the step has been taken in the wake of improved security scenario in the places where these VVIPs have been living. They assert that Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) cover of former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir Mufti Mohammed Sayeed has been withdrawn and is likely to be replaced by jawans of local police. Along with Mufti, Chairman of National Commission for Schedule Caste (NCSC) Buta Singh has also lost the ITBP security cover. The development comes at a time when speculations are rife that differences between Congress and Mufti's are PDP weaning away. Not only this, a courtesy call of UPA Chairperson Mehbooba Mufti was publicized in such a manner by PDP as if to suggest that Congress was all set to abandon National Conference (NC) midway. The move is also significant in the wake of fact that since the formation of coalition government in Jammu and Kashmir in January 2009, PDP's main target has been National Conference (NC) and in particular Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. They have maintained complete silence even over serious allegations of Corruption and favoritism against some congress ministers. PDP's is seemingly convinced that congress would sooner or later leave National Conference and re-enter into an alliance with it. The party leaders are not leaving any opportunity to convince union government of Omar's inability to handle Kashmir situation properly. However, nothing seems to have worked for PDP so far. Congress high command is annoyed over PDP's open support to stone-palters and separatists. Besides, if the sources are to be believed, Union Home Ministry has enough evidence of the involvement of some PDP leaders and their supporters in several incidents of stone-pelting. Besides, Congress does not want to dump Omar Abdullah merely on account of him being unable to control riots in valley. |
