Early Times Report
JAMMU, Oct 22: The river Tawi, also known as ‘Surya putri-daughter of the sun, flows along the left bank of the Chenab river and is in fact one of the major tributaries of the River Chenab. Considered holy and sacred, the river Tawi of Jammu and Kashmir has great religious and historical importance attached to it.
But now this major tributary is being used as a big sewerage dump as effluents of the old Jammu city are dumped into it everyday. Meanwhile, sources said that the pollution level has reached at an alarming proportions.

Though government has planned to make artificial lake in the river Tawi to attract the tourists and make river popular among the visitors from outside state. However, the plan seems to be on papers only as there seems to be no law to prohibit huge dumps of garbage into it.
Truck drivers clean and wash their vehicles on the Sidhra side where Tawi Vihar is located where high dignitaries’ houses but they too prefer to look other way.
People dump garbage in the river without any fear of being punished by the authorities. Many of them throw garbage from the busiest bridge of river Tawi.
Nishant, a student said that he saw a trolley driver dumping the waste material in river from circular road early morning. He said that nobody stopped him from doing the same.
Arti Devi local resident of Tawi Vihar said that the main concern of government is to clean up the river and give back its original crystal clear look and punish those who pollute the river, she added.
Everyday trucks and tractors trolleys enter the Tawi in search of sand and collect sand and also wash their vehicles without caring that there is ban on the same.
Mohan Dass, trolley driver said that he does not know that government banned the cleaning of vehicles in the Tawi. For him, this is routine work for him to wash his vehicle in the Tawi and no body stops him.
Divisional Commissioner, Dr Pawan Kotwal said that he will discuss this matter with municipal commissioner and Pollution State Board and they will take appropriate action in this regard and punish those who will found guilty.
When contacted minister of forest and environment, Mian Altaf, in this regard, he was not available for the comments.
