SMVDU land compensation scam: DC Udhampur's office raided
11/9/2010 11:01:07 PM

SUMIT SHARMA
EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Nov 9: The crime branch today raided the office of deputy commissioner, Udhampur, and seized records related to Shree Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU) land compensation scam.
For six hours, the CB sleuths examined the entire record, highly placed CB sources said.
The embezzlement in the disbursement of compensation for land acquired by SMVDU came to limelight when some people lodged a complaint with CB, Jammu, alleging that they had not received compensation till now.
Sources said those who did not get compensation had filed a case against SMVDU.
On the basis of complaints, a CB team led by SP Ranjeet Singh Sambyal, Inspector Anu Sharma and SI Javed Ahmed conducted a raid and seized the record.
Sources said during the scrutiny of record, it was found that SMVDU acquired over 3,506 kanals and 6 marlas of land at Kakryal for the purpose of establishing university.
An amount of Rs 8 cr was also granted to the revenue department for its disbursement as compensation by SMVDU.
But out of Rs 8 cr, revenue officials of district Udhampur disbursed only Rs 7 cr and 10 lakh. Thus Rs 90 lakh were embezzled. When contacted, an official of SMVDU said SMVDU was embarrassed by the act of revenue officials and added that in 2002, about 80 families, who were owners of the land acquired by the university, were accommodated in a separate colony and given compensation also.
Sources said after the detection of Rs 90 lakh scam, a list of the revenue officials, who were given the charge of disbursement of compensation, was prepared for questioning them. A CB team would also approach SMVDU administration for its cooperation in the case.
