No stapled visa by China for Jammu residents | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Nov 9: China has refused to change its stapled visa policy on Kashmir. Bit it also makes an exception for artists and sports persons from Jammu and Kashmir. Bishambhar Dass, a sculptor from Jammu and Kashmir, was the only Indian artist at a symposium in China last month. But there was another exception as Dass had a stamped visa on his passport, in contrast to China's policy of issuing only stapled visas to Jammu and Kashmir residents. "Some of the Kashmiri doctors were denied visa for visiting China. I was scared that even my visa would be an issue. I got visa because I was an artist and artists know no universal boundaries," he said. Two months earlier, a group of roller skaters too were surprised when China issued normal visas for the Asian Roller Skating Championship. "No body told us there was any problem but informally we were told Jammu and Kashmir state is a disputed state but nothing happened then," said Jugraj Singh, a member of the team. Besides making exception for certain groups of people, it also seems that Chinese authorities do not recognise Jammu region as a disputed area and somehow follow a dual policy for two regions of the same state. In their recent meeting, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh brought up the issue with Chinese premiere Wen Jiabao, but the deadlock over China's policy continues. |
