Army celebrates ‘Vijay Diwas’

Jammu, Dec 16: Army on Thursday celebrated ‘Vijay Diwas’ and recalled the glorious moments in the history of the country when on December 16, 1971, Lieutenant General Jagjit Singh Aurora, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief Eastern Command of the Indian Army accepted the
surrender of 91,000 strong Pakistan Army alongwith its Commander-in-Chief of East Pakistan, Lieutenant General AAK Niazi. It was the single largest surrender ever in the military history of
the world. This paved the way for birth of a new nation “Bangladesh”. Tiger Division commemorated Vijay Diwas in an impressive function at the Tiger War Memorial. Wreaths were laid by Maj Gen T P S Waraich, General Officer Commanding Tiger Division, and other decorated
soldiers.
Various other formation commanders, serving officers and soldiers of the Division including retired persons were also present during the said occasion. Meanwhile, to honour and recall this great victory, Vijay Diwas was also celebrated at Udhampur, commencing with paying of solemn tributes at the Dhruva War Memorial in remembrance of those valiant men who
made the supreme sacrifice for the country.
The General Officer Commanding-in-Chief Northern Command, Lt Gen BS Jaswal, laid a wreath at the memorial. This ceremony was attended by all ranks of the Command Headquarters.
Later a tea was organised with the ex-serviceman and war veterans of Udhampur district as a part of the of 39th Vijay Diwas Celebration. The function was organised at Bikram Park, Udhampur Military station, under the aegis of 71 Sub Area.
A medical camp was also organised at the venue by the ex-servicemen contributory health scheme. The Army Placement Node, Director Recruiting North Zone set up stalls at the venue for guidance of the ex-servicemen. The Army Commander and other senior officers interacted with the ex-servicemen on the occasion.
