J K freezes as cold wave tightens grip

Srinagar, Dec 21, Cold wave further tightened its grip in Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday with most places in the state recording sub-zero temperature. Leh in frontier region of Ladakh was the coldest place in the state with a low of minus 17.0 degree Celsius, followed by Kargil at minus 11.6 deg C. The temperature in Pahalgam hill resort, which serves as the base camp for the annual Amarnath yatra, dipped to minus 7.0 deg C, MeT officials said.
The famous ski resort of Gulmarg, a star attraction for tourists visiting the valley during winter, also recorded a sub-zero temperature of minus 7.5 deg C. Srinagar also recorded a minimum temperature of minus 6. deg C
.As a result of dip in the temperature, a thin layer of ice was formed on water bodies, including the famous Dal Lake, in Kashmir Valley. Boatmen were seen breaking ice with paddles while moving towards the river banks this morning
