Mir inaugurates Basmati Buyer Seller Meet
'Event will pave way for global market'

Jammu, Dec 21:-Minister for Agriculture, Ghulam Hassan Mir today inaugurated the first of its kind Buyer Seller Meet for world renowned R S Pura Basmati here at Jammu
Club, attended by exporters from across the country, besides the growers from
the border Tehsil. The event was organized by the Directorate of Agriculture
Jammu.
Speaking on the occasion, Mir hoped that the Buyer-Seller Meet will go
a long way in providing a global market for the Basmati Rice produced in
R.S Pura which has great demand around the world .
He said that the meet would bridge the gap between international exporters and growers, besides providing necessary inputs to farmers about the quality
standards, grading and marketing for their produce which in turn will help them to secure good returns. He said the export of basmati rice can play a vital role in boosting the economy of the state.
Referring to the proposed Basmati Development Project, The Minister said that the main focus of the project is to maintain the pure nucleus seed stock at research stations, augmentation of seed at multiplication
Farms and seed villages, making available quality seed to farmers, popularization of best economic practices, post harvest management , market networking and creation of awareness among farmers.
He said that Government has already waived off the toll tax on all Agriculture
implements in the last budget session and assured that in coming session government is also seriously thinking to exempt these of VAT.
Vice Chairman Kissan Welfare Board, Kr. Rachpal Singh said the board would take all measures to benefit the grower and it would act as a bridge between farmer and government.
Principal Secretary Agriculture M. I. Khanday said that agriculture is our identity and added that it has a huge potential for sustainable employment to the job seekers of the state. Vice Chancellor SUKAST Dr. B. Mishra highlighted the taste and aroma of R. S. Pura Basmati rice varieties and said that it is comparable with the best in the world and better than the long grained rice varieties presently being exported.
