NC has brazenly bartered JK's natural resources for power: PDP | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Dec 21: Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) today said that the successive National Conference regimes have brazenly bartered State's interests and aspirations of the people of this region for the lust of power. Party further observed that National Conference leadership has always preferred power over protecting or furthering peoples' interests and addressing their aspirations. Speaking in the one day convention of the district committee members of Doda district, senior PDP leaders said that State has suffered huge losses due to the discriminatory and grossly unfair agreements signed by the successive NC regimes with other agencies. They especially mentioned the discriminatory agreements singed by the previous NC regime headed by Dr Farooq Abdullah with the NHPC against a paltry royalty of just 12 percent, which was nothing but a virtually sellout of State's natural resources. Party leaders reiterated their demands of renegotiating and scrapping such grossly unfair agreements so as to make the State economically self-reliant. Ridiculing NC leadership for making claims of protecting State's interests, PDP leaders added that no State in the country would barter its resources in such a reckless manner as was done by the NC government by handing over seven power projects to NHPC under an arbitrary agreement signed by the then National Conference government headed by Dr Farooq Abdullah with the Union Power Ministry. They said that NC's illogical surrender of the State's water resources to the NHPC was another worst blow to its economy because the State has been already suffering huge losses due to the Indus Water Treaty. PDP leaders pointed out that that water is to Jammu and Kashmir as oil is to the oil producing countries, but National Conference regimes had systematically sold out this most valuable resource just for political power. They further added that it was tragic that a state so rich in resources, that it could be cash surplus, was converted into a virtual begging bowl as a result of NC's lust for power. "Had successive NC regime not surrendered our natural resources in such a reckless manner for enjoying power, the State would have been economically self-reliant", they regretted and shifted all blames of successive NC regimes for under-development in Doda district. Pointing towards backwardness in the Chenab Valley region, PDP leaders said many parts of the country have been taking benefits of the water flowing in this region but the local people have been living in dark ages. They further pointed out that water agreements singed by the successive NC regimes have further compounded woes of the people as no provision was made to provide employment to the locals who were forced to look for menial jobs. PDP leaders exhorted the party workers to educate the masses about such misdeeds of NC. They said that wrong policies of NC governments were responsible for unequal development and backwardness of many areas of the State. General Secretary Thakur Balbir Singh, Sardar Rangil Singh, Abdul Aziz Zargar, former Minister, Murtaza Khan, MLC, Falail Singh, Hussain Ali Wafa, Ved Mahajan, Shanti Devi, Daman Bhasin, district president Doda Sheikh Mujib Ali, Attaullah Khan, Imtiyaz advocate, Riyaz Zarger, Prof Shoiab Malik, Surjeet Kour, Vijay Dogra and others addressed the convention. |
