BJP & Kashmir -- II

EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Dec 27: As for the reaction of Kashmiri leaders, separatists or otherwise, to what the BJP leaders said in Jammu, almost all of them said it was "all communalism." Yasin Malik of the JKLF accused the BJP of "launching a campaign against the resolution of Kashmir issue and asked the party to desist from such practice and instead push the Congress-led UPA Government to carry forward the process for finding a peaceful solution to Kashmir issue." He asked BJP leaders, especially L K Advani, to recall what his party did when in power and refrain from making provocative statements. His suggestion was that the BJP should pursue the Atal Bihari Vajpayee line. In this connection, he referred to what Vajpayee had said on January 2, 2001. On January 2, 2001, the then Prime Minister, Vajpayee, had said: "we shall not traverse solely on the beaten track of the past rather we shall be bold and innovative designers of a future architecture of peace and prosperity of South Asian region."
Mirwaiz Umar Farooq also reacted in almost a similar fashion. He, among other things, said: "This was clear communal and divisive card played by BJP…They want to give impression that they represent the sentiments of entire Jammu. In reality, their view represents only two and half districts of Jammu region. The rest of the areas are with Kashmir valley. They have the same political thought as people of valley have."
Syed Ali Shah Geelani of Tehrik-e-Hurriyat said: "Provocative statements and slogans by the BJP cannot change the 'disputed' status of J&K. For the past 63 years, the Sangh Parivar, Jana Sangh and other communal forces in India have tried to change the status of this disputed area, but the sensitivity and seriousness of the issue has only grown with time. Again, these communal forces are trying to defame our freedom struggle by communalizing the situation in Jammu." He also said: "Communal forces are creating an atmosphere of fear and tension among Jammu Muslims…Jana Sangh has made the province (Jammu) centre of its extremist and communal activities. Muslims in Jammu are feeling insecure. Their fears of another 1947 like genocide are not misplaced given the manner in which communal forces are gaining influence in administration, police and the Army."
Sajjad Lone of the Peopl's Conference (PC) said: "The BJP statement reflects a contradiction in itself. Eith their Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee was telling a lie or now the present leadership of BJP is telling a lie…Both cannot be sticking to the truth…The BJP remarks are a sad day for Vajpayee. The present leadership could not take forward the legacy by thinking out-of-box solution for addressing the vexed dispute of Kashmir…It is in fact shocking that BJP is using Kashmir to score point on their adversaries (read Congress in particular). Everyone knows that it was Valley where even children got killed recently. So how can you do politics on the blood?"
Moulana Showkat Ahmad Shah of the Jamait Ahlihadis termed as a reflection of "Zionist mindset" what the BJP leaders said in Jammu. He said: "The resolution of Kashmir issue in accordance with the wishes and aspirations of its people is inevitable for peace and security of the sub-continent."
Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, patron of People's Democratic Party, accused the BJP of adopting a "negative political position" on Kashmir and, among other things, said: "It's sad that the country's principal opposition party is trying to destroy the national consensus on resolution of Jammu and Kashmir problem initiated by none other than its patriarch Atal Bihari Vajpayee…It is unfortunate that the claimants to Vajpayee's legacy are now trying to wreck any chances of its success…Vajpayee had taken a bold initiative on Kashmir at a time when India and Pakistan were at loggerheads…The former prime minister had reached out to the people of the state at a time when a PDP-Congress coalition was at the helm of affairs in the state. He rose above petty partisan considerations and responded in a dignified manner to the urge
for peace and resolution that he gauged on his visit to Srinagar… (what the BJP leaders said in Jammu) had the potential of degenerating into a divisive discourse that would be the last thing that people of Jammu and Kashmir ever needed…It is necessary that the leaders like LK Advani raise the debate to dignified political levels and use their prestige and stature for onward movement in the resolution effort…the BJP leadership should, in accordance with a truly democratic system, urge the government to come out of its cosmetic exercises on Kashmir, resume dialogue with separatists that was initiated by LK Advani, stop excesses committed by an insensitive coalition and reduce miseries of the people reeling under corruption and indifference."
