SaMaPa Aalap 2011 commenced

JAMMU, Jan 9: The 5th Annual ‘SaMaPa Aalap Festival' presented by Sopori Academy of Music And Performing Arts commenced here today with mesmerizing
Santoor recital by renowned Santoor maestro and music composer Abhay
Rustum Sopori.
The first session of the seventeen day long festival was inaugurated
by Dr. Farooq Abdullah, Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy
and Pandit Bhajan Sopori, at Press Club Jammu specially organized for
the Journalists and Media personalities of Jammu & Kashmir State. The
concert was very well attended by the media and music connoisseurs who
appreciated the efforts of SaMaPa in reaching all sections of the
society with its cultural activities.
Abhay played a beautiful evening melody Raga Rageshree. He presented a
brief Aalap and Jod explaining the intricacies of making the entire
audience sing with him. Abhay also presented the Sufiana Tarana of his
grandfather, the legendary musician and ‘Father of Classical music in
J&K, Pandit Shamboo Nath Sopori. This was followed by 2 compositions,
a bandish ‘Phoolon Ki Mala’ and another Sufiana Tarana in Teentaal
with exciting layakari (rhythmic sequences).
Dr. Farooq Abdullah appreciated that the Sopori family’s intense role
in keeping the J&K culture alive is unparallel. He felicitated Pt.
Sopori and Abhay for their contribution to the field of culture.
Abhay thanked the J&K Media for their support and cooperation to him
and the over welcoming response he has received over the years in the
State. The festival will now feature more than 25-30 presentations
till 25th January by a number of upcoming and eminent musicians of the
State and the country.
