It is official: govt not to allow 'trouble' in state | On 'collision course' ….BJP defiant | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Jan 20: It is now official. The state government will not allow BJP's Ekta Yatra reach up to the historic Lal Chowk on January 26, Republic Day. But ,in what appears to be the state government and the BJP heading for a big 'collision and clash' over flag hoisting row, both are readying with antagonistic strategies. Even as state government today formally announced it would 'withstand the act' for maintaining law and order and larger motive of peace in the state, the BJP is moving ahead with preparations in complete defiance of what government contends. Though it was a foregone conclusion that government will stop the Yatra far ahead of its destination, the decision was given somewhat formal shape today in presence of few ministers and higher authorities. "We have all respect for the national tricolour………the government will celebrate the Republic Day with great fervour and enthusiasm across the state…..every thing would be done with dignity and honor……elaborate arrangements are being made to hoist flags at every place", said a senior minister in the coalition government who was among those who attended. "But the main thing we have decided in today's meeting is that if anyone is hell bent to do anything which vitiates law and order, that will not be tolerated….it will certainly be resisted…..", the minister said, indicating the Chief Minister today made it loud in clear terms, a formal decision which was given a go ahead nod by ministerial colleagues of all allies. A day after Chief Minister Omar Abdullah met Union Home Minister P Chidam-baram in Delhi, he convened a formal meeting here to discuss the most crucial matter confronting his government. Even as no formal strategy was discussed how and where the Yatra would be stopped, for now the meeting was informed it has directed the Civil and Police authorities to ensure that all measures are taken to ensure that the law and order in the state is not disturbed in the run up to the Republic Day Celebrations. As for the formal strategy, the government has decided to stop the Yatra midway, much ahead of the final destination. It will not be only one place but at different places where the restrictions would be in place few days ahead, said the sources. The government is aware that trouble can erupt at any place and from any side… so the guard is being increased accordingly, sources added indicating at every district quarter level not only the administrative authorities but police and para military forces would be put on alert and it will be a vigil more than usual. At the main venue, Lal Chowk, it will turn into a sort of garrison as the deployment of forces would be extra ordinary in the wake of both BJYM plan and the contention of separatist leaders to counter it, sources added. All these things have been given go ahead signal from the Centre, though government is dealing with issue in a manner to show it is to be 'tackled' and dealt by itself. In complete contravention of what government is arranging, the BJP is all set for the show, updating the preparations every hour. "Flag hoisting will happen no matter government stops the yatra…..it can be done by one man alone….the idea and motive is that national flag must unfurl at Lal Chowk", said a senior BJP leader. The party claims nearly 50,000 activists would converge before entering the J&K state, final destination of the Yatra. Interestingly, while the state government is trying to plug the land route, hundreds of leaders and activists from as far places like Karntala and Andhra Pradesh are arriving by other modes of transport, confirmed a party leader. |
