EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Feb 17: Former Vice-Chancellor of Jammu University Amitabh Mattoo has reportedly met the AICC president and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and expressed his sincere desire to join Congress and serve the nation as a true Congressman. Sonia Gandhi has reportedly welcomed the proposal. His induction in the Congress, according to reports from New Delhi, would go a long way in bridging the gulf between the estranged and displaced Kashmiri Hindus and the Congress, thus strengthening further the Congress party in the state. "Congress leaders believe that with Mattoo on their side, the party may regain its lost constituency amongst Kashmiri Pandits," one of the reports has said. All in all, it's good news for the Congress party in Jammu and Kashmir in general and the displaced community of Kashmiri Hindus in particular.
The displaced Kashmiri Hindus need a steersman and Amitabh Mattoo can be a steersman. He knows their psyche and problem and can be a bridge between them and the Congress and between them and those who forced them to quit Kashmir because of their pro-India leanings. After all, he is one person who has consistently championed the Kashmiri cause at national and international foras and has in his kitty many a solution. Take, for example, one of his Kashmir solutions: Open borders, irrelevant Line of Control, demilitarization, autonomy, self-rule, good relations with Pakistan based not on what he calls the "coercive policy of non-engagement" but based on the principle of give, healing touch, compassion for stone throwers and subversives, water supply to Pakistan to the extent Islamabad needs. This is what the estranged and displaced Kashmiri Hindus want. They do not want a separate homeland or a separate security zone within Kashmir. They want what Amitabh Mattoo wants and the latter can ensure another displacement of the already displaced community so that it throws in their lot with the Kashmiri leadership and live at its mercy. The fact of the matter is that Mattoo can play the role of a saviour.
The Congress party also needs a distinguished Kashmiri Hindu and a man of impeccable integrity to win over the estranged Kashmiri Hindus and who would be better than Amitabh Mattoo. He would be an asset in Jammu and Kashmir and he would be great help to the Congress party in Delhi as well because he lives in the Union capital and is on the staff of a university that has produced innumerable peaceniks, human rights activists and those who don't mind Kashmir going out of India. They want peace at whatever cost. It hardly matters if India breaks into smithereens. He would be an asset for the Congress party in Delhi because he has connections with Pakistan, United States and Kashmiri separatists. He could help the Congress party bring on board New Delhi, Islamabad, Washington D C and extremists, thus enabling the grand old party to resolve the 63-year-old problem in Kashmir.
Hence, the sooner the Congress high command inducts Amitabh Mattoo in the party better for the Congress, the state, the country and the displaced Kashmiri Hindus.
