JAMMU, Feb 25: The only other day, Egypt witnessed a revolution culminating into the collapse of President Hosni Mubarak’s over three-decade dictatorial and corrupt government. He fled away from the country, leaving everything to the care of Egyptians. It was a revolution brought about by the people and not by any political leader or social activist. Face book like social networking played the major role in mobilizing people and bringing about revolution – a methodology that is also being adopted by the Indians. The major causes responsible for the revolution were rampant corruption, unemployment, poverty, high food prices, scarcity of food and the resultant deaths due to poverty. Another cause was the massing of wealth by Mubarak to the tune of 70 billion dollars, all at the cost of the suffering Egyptians.
The situation in India is no different. The political system has failed and collapsed. There exists no government in the country worth its name. The people have lost faith both in the political system and those at the helm. The bureaucracy has become uncontrollable, arrogant and irresponsible. In fact, there is nexus between politicians and bureaucrats and others, all looting the country and bending rules that benefit them and harm the common people. It has become extremely difficult for the poor to keep his body and soul together. It has become difficult to run the kitchen because of high food prices and other things of daily use, including cooking gas and kerosene. It is the Supreme Court of India which has been intervening and asking the government to behave and act, but with no tangible result. There is serious unemployment problem, with the talented youth moving heaven and earth to get even petty jobs. There is a live threat to the internal and external security of India, but nothing is being done to address this issue of great national import. With the result, the anti-national forces have become very active and quite vocal. Attempts are being made to pit one section against the other in order to create an environment that suits certain brand of politicians. The truth, in short, is that things in India are as bad as they were in Egypt, which forced the Egyptians to rise in revolt.
However, the question is: Can the Indians replicate Egypt in India, notwithstanding the fact that Yoga Guru Ram Dev has taken the initiative? He has warned the custodians of the Indian State that any failure on their part to stem the rot would lead to a revolution similar to the one the world witnessed in Egypt. He has said in unequivocal terms that if Egypt could witness a non-violent revolution leading to the fall of Mubarak, why can’t Egypt be replicated in India? So much so that he has asked the government will it do in case the people imitate Mahatma Gandhi and start civil disobedience movement?
Ram Dev has said that people’s hard earned money has been and is being stashed in Swiss and other banks. “We will bring about peaceful and non-violent revolution in the country and bring back the black money; it’s the duty of the Government of India to bring back the stashed away money but it is only protecting and shielding those who drained India and stashed billions and billions of Indian rupees in the foreign banks; the Government of India is befooling and misleading both the Supreme Court of India and the people in its desperate bid to protect the guilty; it’s time to conduct NARCO test of all the ministers; if corruption, rape, black money, hoarding and adulteration could invite death sentence in our neighbouring country China, why can’t India enact stringent laws to take on anti-social and anti-India elements?; a whopping 100 lakh crores of black money is in circulation in the country, which is adversely impacting the economic health of India; the government has not done anything to ensure the arrest of Hasan Ali, who has cost the Indian exchequer 50 thousand crores of rupees (he has not paid tax to the tune of 50 thousand crores); and there are reasons to believe that certain corrupt, anti-India and cheats have joined hands with Ali and are looting and fleecing the Indians.”
It is significant to note that Ram Dev’s formulations have got support from industrialists like Rahul Bajaj. Sharing the views of the Yoga Guru, Bajaj has said that corruption is so deep-rooted that the big corporate houses have been left with no other option but to bribe in order to get their work done. “Everywhere there is corruption in India. The most horrible aspect is that it is the political parties which use the black money during elections for winning elections. This is a dangerous signal for India. People have now started feeling the pinch and raking up this issue in a big way,” he has, in fact, said.
This is the situation. But the question still remains: Will Ram Dev, who is under severe attack from the Congress party, be successful in his endeavours? He claims he has the support of one billion Indians. One cannot contest his claim. He is indeed very popular. But it would be seen if he succeeds in making optimum use of the popular support he enjoys and giving effect to what he has been saying in the context of what happened in Egypt.
