Verite Film Festival at IUST

AWANTIPORA, April 20: A film festival titled ‘Verite’ organized by Parallel Post – an e-magazine in collaboration with Islamic University of Science & Technology Awantipora was organized at IUST campus.
The event was attended by Prof. AR Trag, Vice Chancellor IUST, Zareef Ahmed Zareef, renowned poet, Yasir Bashir Bawani, Director EKTA Theatre Group, Aijazul Haque, columnist, Shahid Rasool, Director EMMRC Kashmir, in addition to various other well known personalities from media and academia.
Delivering the keynote address, Prof. AR Trag termed documentary films as a ‘means of social service’ and highlighted on how films ‘can be used to address the evils in our society’. He expressed his delight at such initiatives by the students and advised them to create a balance in their life between studies and other activities. “This time will never come back. Use it to the fullest”, he said.
Twenty-two films were screened on the day dealing with various ‘hard-hitting and pressing issues’ such as livelihood issues, loss of tradition and heritage, conflict and its various facets of presentation, drug abuse etc.
Life on Wheels by Adil Shah won the award for the best film. Pankh by Nishant was adjudged the second prize winner and the third prize was given to three films - Lost by Ather Mohiuddin,Hopskotch by Malik Sajjad and Eidiyaan by Mohammad Irfan Dar amd Aman Kaleem. The winners were awarded certificates and trophies.
The festival enthused and captivated the imagination of the attendees. “In Kashmir, platforms like this one are rare. To be able to present your film to a serious audience like this is a feeling of accomplishment that nothing can compare to” said Lebul Nisa, a participant at the festival.
“The Parallel Post is the first e-magazine of the valley. It has been our priority to provide a platform for young writers of the valley as well from outside the valley too. The idea of this ‘first’ film festival is on the same lines – to groom the talent of our youth”, said Anees Amin Zargar on behalf of Parallel Post.
The film festival was sponsored by Spectrum Advertising Agency, Raheem Greens, Compware Classes, and co-sponsored by Khyber Cements, Ford Auto and Kashmir Watch House with Big 92.7 FM as radio partner.
