Beware “Civilised” people… CCTVs are watching you! | | | KUNAL SHRIVATSA JAMMU, May 5 Sending a word of caution to those who have been found on camera damaging the recently installed lane dividers, the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Traffic Hemant Kumar Lohia said today that the so called ‘cream’ of the society should refrain from such acts as their activities are under scanner. “The CCTVs installed at various points in the city is yielding good results for us… They are really effective in more than one ways… We are in possession of 10 to 12 video clips wherein some civilised (Sabhrant) people have been found damaging the recently put up barricades with their vehicles,” IGP Lohia said while addressing a press conference. “We are initiating action against them… The guilty persons are under scanner…. I would like to ask all those caught on camera damaging the dividers not to indulge in such acts …. Their action is not only harmful for them but also makes our work more difficult,” the senior police officer added. Highlighting the importance of technology, the IGP said that soon the department will introduce Global Positioning System (GPS) in Vehicles to overcome the shortage of manpower and track down the violators of traffic rules. “I believe that technology could play a big role in manning the traffic… With in six months from now, all the vehicles especially Public Service Vehicles (PSVs) including Auto rickshaws, Sumos, Mini buses, Buses and Goods Carriers will be equipped with GPS device…. The cost of the device is around Rs 8-9 thousand and it will be borne by commercial vehicle owners,” IGP Lohia informed “The GPS system would have two in-built features which include tracking down of prescribed route of a commercial vehicle and load capacity…. As and when a bus or mini bus driver violates the prescribed route, we will come to know the deviation through the GPS… On detection of the infringement, the Control Room would immediately immobilise the vehicle’s engine …. Similarly if overloading is detected, the engine of the bus, truck or load carrier would be seized,” he added Stressing the need to apply methods including Car pooling to decongest the city roads, Lohia said such schemes should be backed by the citizens. “The responsibility of regulating the traffic and decongesting the city roads has to be borne by everybody,” IGP said Appealing the media particularly print media to publish the list of violators booked under Run away challan scheme of the department, the IGP Traffic said that he looks forward for the media’s cooperation in this regard.
