'Change' in Press Note contents reflects puzzled face of BJP
7/17/2011 11:47:20 PM
Early Times Report
Jammu, July 17 : The state unit of BJP had to cut a sorry figure changing the 'tone and tenor' of the press note it issued on Saturday at least three times that focussed on hitting out at Congress leadership at the central level in the wake of Mumbai serial blasts. The repetition of the same statement with corrections reflected either directionless affairs within or lack of knowledge on policy matters of the party while it lashes out at opponent Congress on key issues. It only brought embarrassment to the leadership at a time when the newly appointed incharge and co incharge came to Jammu for the first time to assume their assignments.
The press note with hard hitting statement by one of the spokespersons came first with a heading asking Congress to 'act or quit....', followed by another one having unchanged content and a changed heading, this time omitting the word 'quit' and asking the Congress leadership to act on checking terrorist incidents to save the country from its scourge. While the first press note was issued early in the day , the second one with oldly written 'corrected and changed press note' was received by media through e mail IDs in the after noon , only to be seen again thrice with 'final press note ' tag . In the third and final one , it was sent with changes on heading as well deletion of the 'quitting' emphasis in the content of the statement in subsequent paragraphs.
Such confusion reflecting lack of confidence on what the spokesperson had originally written obviously did not augur well for anyone , not at least those in senior positions in the party hierarchy. There was not any huge or substantial change only except changing the word on 'quitting' which underlined the emphasis of party on asking resignation from the Congress. But, this supposedly did not go with what national level leadership during the day blasts happened in Mumbai had been targetting Congress on.No BJP leader at the national level was seen asking the Congress to resgin or quit, no matter it took on the party with hard hitting statements for its failure to safeguard the lives of people from such acts. It dawned on the state leadership late that this utterance did not relate with national leadership statements which is why the press note was sought to be changed three times.
That a national party like BJP has more than two spokespersons in a sesnitive state like J&K is well understood. It has so many issues to talk about and give statements on on day to day basis. But when it comes key issues, the whole hierachy , rank and file of the leaders need to show coherence at least on idelogical and policy matters, instead of showing directionless or idependent attitude. For this only causes embarrasment besides indicating things are not well within one voice. In other words it gives bad image for the functioning of teh party leadership, which at least this unit cannot afford in the backdrop of the crisis and controversy of cross voting followed by suspension and expulsion developments, all things which are yet to be settled and far from being over.
