Perpetrator brought to justice in 5 months | Egypt has lessons to teach | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Aug 6: on August 3 when former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak was brought by a helicopter to court for his `historic trial', the people in this neglected part of the world envied the people of Egypt. In less than three months, the perpetrator was brought to justice. Mubarak is facing charges of corruption and ordering the killing of protesters during the uprising that ousted him. Egpyt has never tasted democracy. Mubarak ran the country for several decades. He crushed his opponents and enforced his writ brutally. Jammu Kashmir on the other hand opted for a democratic dispensation in 1947. Successive `democratic regimes' crushed dissent through `constitutional' and extra-constitutional tools. Mubarak was ousted by eighteen days of uprising, six months of agitation went in vain in Jammu Kashmir. While Egypt is marching ahead, nothing has moved here. Innocent people got killed last year and a boy was tortured to death in a torture chamber by the men in uniform. The authorities have transferred the concerned Police Superintendent (SP) only to occupy a prize post somewhere else. Punishing men in uniform is not in the interest of the government. They have been doing a commendable job from the very beginning. Yes, people get killed when police maintain order. Some people call it collateral damage. Death keeps a definite calendar. A person dies when he is supposed to die. But can this adage justify the killing of the Sopore youth. It could be prevented had the government taken action against those involved in last year's 120 killings. Majority of the last year's deceased were school going children. The democratic government did constitute a commission to probe just seventeen killings. The probe, they say is going on. And if previous experiences are any indicator, the probe may go on forever. The government did not give any reasons for being so selective even in probing killings. Egypt has many lessons to teach. Are the people and the authorities ready to learn?
