Cong unlikely to allow Omar to continue after Dec 2011 | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Aug 6: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh may have given Chief Minister Omar Abdullah assurance of heading the state for six years but state congress is in no mood to allow National Conference (NC) to lead the coalition after December 2011. Sources close to two senior congress leaders maintained that a strategy is being worked out to ensure exit of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah once the coalition completes three years. They added that modalities are being discussed at the highest level in the state congress to bring the two factions of congress together. Sources said that barring Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, congress leadership at the centre especially UPA chairperson Madam Sonia Gandhi and Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi has remained tightlipped over the issue. They have not even once talked in open about allowing Omar Abdullah to continue till year 2014 as head of the NC-Congress coalition government. Sources further disclosed that congress president has kept the cards closed and would be closely watching the situation unfolding in Jammu and Kashmir. They said that congress leadership neither wants to destabilize the government nor desires to annoy its party cadre across the state. While the Kashmir question is preventing congress leadership from taking a decision in haste, sources said that repeated pleas of the party rank and file to take over reigns of power in J&K once the coalition complete three years has resulted in party taking every step in Jammu and Kashmir cautiously. From Mohan Parkash, who is party's J&K incharge to top leaders in New Delhi, all are watching the situation cautiously. Sources said that the only thing which can prevent Omar's ouster is factionalism in congress while adding that efforts are on to bridge the gaps between the warring congress factions. "Once we succeed in this, no one can prevent congress from getting its Chief Minister," said a congress leader. He added that National Conference has had its share in governance and now, it is the congress which has to lead the coalition for next three years. "They should have no problem with this arrangement. It is a coalition government and they have to listen to us which they are not doing presently," added the leader. He affirmed that in no way, congress would allow Omar to continue beyond December 2011. |
