Demand for Truth & Reconciliation commission Omar raking it up due to 'shaky political ground'….? | | | Early Times Report Jammu , Sept 10: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah earlier this year called for setting up of a Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) in the state in March when the Assembly session was on. He is now strongly vouching for it ahead of the Assembly session which is due to begin from September 26 in Srinagar. In the backdrop of the fact that he had urged the state Assembly to prepare a resolution on the need to have this Commission, his reiteration on the issue assumes significance this time. The Chief Minister had underlined the necessity of TRC in his reply on debate on Governor's address in which he dwelt in detail the situational aspects of the state , militancy related violence, HR issues etc. His thrust on setting up of this Commission focused on the need to probe the deaths and destructions in militancy-related violence in this state for over last 21 years. His idea of preparing a resolution was to get it passed in the state Assembly and then forward it to the Centre so that latter constitutes the Commission. So far so good. But, the question one is prompted to ask is that why Chief Minister is raking up the issue once again. He has himself said it that when he was in Opposition he was the first person to demand it and when his party is power he doesn't hesitate to be loud over it. It may well be the fact that Assembly session is round the corner and he wants Assembly of which he is the leader to pass the resolution in this session. It is also possible that since he has been seen vocal and loud for over a week over the issue , he may have asked the party to be the first to presentation the resolution in the House. The fact also remains that whatever Omar is doing is just to consolidate his political constituency, notwithstanding the fact that he got prompted to reiterate it in the wake of revelations made by the SHRC that thousands of unmarked graves have been found in the Kashmir Valley. However, the observation by some political pandits cannot be ruled out that Omar has apprehensions of possibility of change of guard by the end of the year when he completes three years in office. He has started trumpeting the demand because he is apprehensive of losing the chair to ally Congress. One more fact remains that Omar is raking it up when all the political parties in Kashmir, including its rival PDP is silent over the issue. |
