Panchayat Polls: PDP, NC to review poll boycott
10/26/2018 11:34:41 PM

Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Oct 26: With national parties especially Bharatiya Janta Party, and the Congress gaining ground in the Jammu and Kashmir state during the recently held Urban Local Body Polls, the main regional players especially National Conference and the Peoples Democratic Party are likely to review their poll boycott policy.
Sources said the twin regional parties are expected to call separate meetings of their senior leaders in the coming days to discuss that "boycott" in the Urban Local Body polls has pressed the panic buttons.
Sources said the top leadership of both that parties have got feedback that if the regional parties don't contest in the coming Panchayat polls, the NC and PDP may "become a history" by the time next Assembly elections are held in the state.
Sources said from Dr Farooq Abdullah and Omar Abdullah to Mehbooba Mufti leaders of both the parties are unnerved by results of the recently held ULB polls.
"See the fact of the matter is that despite doing poll boycott drama both the parties had fielded their proxy candidates but they got defeated. So there is a sense of insecurity among both the parties. If they don't openly come out to contest the Panchayat Polls, their game is over," said a senior politician privy to the developments.
Sources said while the NC is likely to call a meeting at this party headquarters at Nawa-e-Subh, the PDP will hold meeting at the official residence of Mehbooba Mufti.
The Abdullahs are already understood to have held on such meeting between the father and the son at their Gupkar residence and have "made up their minds in one particular direction."
Sources apart from the Muftis and the Abdullahs, other senior leaders of both the parties have agreed that their survival was dependant on participation in the upcoming Panchayat Polls for which the dates have been recently announced.
Sources said there was every possibility that after separate meetings of the two parties, Omar and Mehbooba may jointly discuss the matter.
It was reliably learnt that after requisite deliberations the party will soon come out with announcement of change in their strategy.
"You will soon hear a major announcement in this regard," said a source privy to the developments.
Despite repeated attempts the leaders of the twin regional parties couldn't be contacted for comments.
