| Terrorists strike in Anantnag; Head Constable Ashiq Hussain martyred | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, July 22: A Jammu and Kashmir Police head constable was martyred after terrorists opened fire on him in broad daylight in Anantnag district on Wednesday, marking yet another terror strike in the Valley amid heightened security for the ongoing Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra.
Head Constable Ashiq Hussain Qureshi, who was deployed on Amarnath Yatra security duty, was attacked by unidentified terrorists at Lal Chowk on the Kokernag Road in Anantnag. He sustained critical bullet injuries and was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, where he succumbed during treatment.
The brazen attack triggered panic in the busy market area, with tourists and local residents fleeing the spot. Security forces immediately rushed to the scene and cordoned off the area.
The Resistance Front (TRF), a proxy outfit of the Pakistan-based terror group Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), claimed responsibility for the attack through a statement circulated online. The outfit reportedly described the attack as an attempt to challenge the security arrangements for the annual Amarnath Yatra and threatened to carry out similar attacks in the future.
Following the incident, Director General of Police Nalin Prabhat, accompanied by Special DGP S.J.M. Gillani, visited the attack site and reviewed the security situation. The DGP paid tribute to the martyred police personnel and expressed condolences to the bereaved family.
Condemning the attack, the DGP said the sacrifice of the police officer would not go in vain and asserted that those responsible for the killing, along with their supporters, would be brought to justice. He directed security agencies to intensify anti-terror operations and ensure that the perpetrators are tracked down at the earliest.
A massive Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) has been launched by the Jammu and Kashmir Police, assisted by other security forces, to trace the attackers. Additional reinforcements have been deployed, and security has been tightened across the district.
Meanwhile, the Cyber Police of Jammu and Kashmir issued an advisory urging people not to circulate sensitive photographs or videos related to the attack on social media. It cautioned that sharing such content could hamper the ongoing investigation and compromise security operations, warning that legal action would be taken against violators.
The attack comes at a time when security forces are maintaining a high level of alert across Jammu and Kashmir following recent terror incidents and in view of the ongoing Amarnath pilgrimage.
Reports said that Jammu and Kashmir Police have picked up some Over Ground Workers (OGWs) from different parts of the Valley after the gruesome killing of a head constable, Ashiq Hussain. |
