Jammu, Sept 8: In a case that lands as a stinging irony for Jammu and Kashmir Police just as it wraps up its high-profile 100-day Nasha Mukti Abhiyan, a Police Sub-Inspector posted in Kathua district has himself been booked under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act — accused of being under the influence of an intoxicating substance while on duty inside a police station.
The officer, identified as PSI Amjid Khan (GEC No. 245791), was allegedly seen behaving in a manner that raised suspicions of substance consumption at the police station premises. Acting swiftly, authorities had him taken for a medical examination at Sub-District Hospital (SDH) Hiranagar, where a drug-testing kit was used to check whether he had consumed any prohibited substance.
The test results confirmed officials’ suspicions, indicating consumption of a narcotic or contraband substance.
Legal proceedings followed almost immediately, with police registering FIR No. 97/2026 at the concerned station under Sections 8 and 27 of the NDPS Act — the same law the force has spent the last hundred days invoking against drug peddlers and users across the Union Territory.
The case has now been handed to PSI Rajat Jasrotia (No. 196315/EXJ) for investigation, with authorities examining the full circumstances surrounding the alleged consumption.
The episode comes at an awkward moment for J&K Police, which had just concluded its 100-day Nasha Mukti Abhiyan — a sweeping anti-narcotics campaign pitched as a flagship effort to root out drug abuse from the region, including within its own ranks.
The action against one of its own now raises uncomfortable questions about how deep the problem the campaign was meant to solve may actually run, even inside the force tasked with fighting it. |
