Jammu, Sept 28: Weapons recovered from gangsters and drug smugglers in the Jammu division are increasingly being linked to people across the border, and police are now working to map the supply network behind them.
Investigators are trying to establish two things: the routes by which weapons are being pushed in from across the border, and who is delivering them to gangsters and smugglers at the local level. In recent cases, police and investigating agencies arrested gang associates and drug peddlers and recovered weapons from them.
Questioning revealed that they were in contact with people based across the border. Agencies are no longer treating the recoveries as isolated local crimes and are instead connecting the links of the larger network behind them.
According to police, handlers across the border are also trying to draw young people and teenagers into the network. Minors are suspected of being lured with small sums of money to carry weapons or consignments of drugs. Police are now identifying such youth and examining their online contacts.
Police have stepped up monitoring of social media contact between gangsters and people across the border. Suspicious accounts, online conversations and attempts to recruit youth into gangs are being tracked. The police media cell and cyber team are keeping constant watch on social media activity.
Police said they will not allow Pakistan's attempts to draw young people into this network to succeed. |
