Leh, Apr 26: Reacting to the developments, the Apex Body of Ladakh termed the Home Minister’s visit a crucial opportunity to resolve long-pending issues and restore public trust.
At a high-level meeting in Leh, the body stressed that the visit must yield concrete outcomes rather than remain limited to prolonged deliberations. While welcoming the announcement of the May 22 talks, members expressed concern that secretary-level discussions may lack the authority required for decisive action.
The Apex Body asserted that confidence-building measures must go beyond the revocation of the NSA and address the fallout of the September unrest, which reportedly left five persons dead, around 80 injured, and 83 arrested. Allegations of excessive use of force, including live ammunition, have further deepened public resentment.
The group demanded unconditional withdrawal of cases against those arrested, full compensation for victims and families of the deceased, and a transparent inquiry into the incidents. It also called for legal action against those responsible and the release of individuals allegedly detained without sufficient evidence.
Members noted that the recent withdrawal of charges against a key accused has raised expectations for similar relief in other cases.
Highlighting delays in justice delivery, the Apex Body also flagged pending issues such as allotment of land to families of martyrs, which remain unimplemented despite prior approvals.
On the political front, the body urged the Home Minister to personally chair a meeting of the High-Powered Committee in Ladakh, involving both the Apex Body and the Kargil Democratic Alliance. It maintained that only direct engagement at the highest level can lead to meaningful outcomes.
Reiterating its core demands, the Apex Body said discussions must adhere to the agreed four-point agenda, including constitutional safeguards such as statehood and inclusion under the Sixth Schedule.
The organisation concluded that immediate announcements on compensation, withdrawal of cases, and policy clarity ahead of the visit would be crucial in creating a conducive atmosphere for dialogue and restoring public confidence. |
