| India rejects ruling of 'so-called' Indus Waters Court | | No international body holds jurisdiction over India's sovereign decisions: MEA |    | Mahim Gupta

Jammu, Aug 31: India has flatly rejected the latest ruling delivered by the Court of Arbitration — the world's oldest forum for resolving international disputes — over the Indus Waters Treaty, going a step further to reject the tribunal's legitimacy altogether.
The Ministry of External Affairs made its position unambiguous: India has not merely dismissed the verdict, it has refused to recognise the court's authority to rule on the matter at all. No international body, the ministry asserted, holds jurisdiction over India's sovereign decisions. The ruling in question, issued on Monday, addressed the status of the Indus Waters Treaty and associated interim measures.
In a strongly worded statement, the ministry declared that this "so-called court" was constituted by the World Bank in clear violation of the treaty's own provisions. "India completely rejects its so-called ruling, just as it has rejected all previous decisions of this illegally constituted body," the statement said.
The ministry pressed the point further, stressing that India has never, in the eyes of law, acknowledged the existence of this unlawfully formed body — and has consistently maintained that the very constitution of this so-called arbitral body is itself a violation of the Indus Waters Treaty. "For this reason," the statement added, "India has never appeared before this body and has paid no heed to any of its earlier rulings." | | |
