Congress, PDP, NC gear up for LC polls

JAMMU, FEB 13
Following the announcement of holding elections to eight Council seats on March 5, many old hawks and heavy weights within three major parties including Congress, National Conference and People’s Democratic Party have joined the race for the polls to upper House.
As per their existing strength in state legislature, Congress and People’s Democratic Party are likely to get three seats each, while the main opposition National Conference would set their claim for two seats. However, there is every likely hood
While many big wigs with in these parties have already started lobbying for their candidature, leadership of all the three have finalized the penal among which the candidates would be handpicked to be finally brought in fray for contesting the elections.
Sources within Party informed that with three seats likely to come in its share, PDP would bring two candidates from Kashmir and one from Jammu.
“The name of Moulvi Ifthikhar Ansari who lost the mid term elections to National Conference after resigning from the same seat only to join Peoples Democratic Party has almost been finalized” said a source within the party adding that there are three candidates whose names are being suggested for the other seat . These are political advisor to PDP president Peerzada Manzoor ,Abdul Haq who unsuccessfully contested election on PDP ticket from Lolab and PDP district president Baramulla.
So for the candidates from Jammu are concerned, the name of Ashiq Hussain is almost finalized sources said adding that Rangil Singh and Iqbal Malik are also among the claimants for the Jammu seat. However, formal announcement of the names of the candidates would be made in the political advisory Committee meeting scheduled to be held tomorrow.
Congress, which has also claim for three seats, is likely to reelect its senior leader Ghulam Rasool Kar besides bringing in former minister Mohammad Sharief Niaz who had vacated Bhaderwah Assembly segment seat for Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad. The name of Congress state Youth President Mohammad Amin Bhat hailing from congress is also almost finalized as presently congress as no representation from District Anantnag in the State legislative Council.
On the other hand, National Conference having claim for two seats is likely to bring in Mohammad Shafi Uri and Choudhary Ramzan. However, the party is likely to contest for more seats backing on the possibility of cross voting.
Elections to eight Legislative Council seats are scheduled to be held on March five as four members each from Kashmir and Jammu Provinces would be retiring in March next.
As per the poll schedule, notification would be issued on February 15 and the last date for filing nominations has been fixed on February 21 and the scrutiny the following day. Last date for the withdrawal of candidatures would be on February 24. The counting of votes would take place on March five
