| EC restrictions take away festive look from Punjab polls | | | CHANDIGARH, FEB 13 The usual festive look during assembly elections in Punjab was missing today as the Election Commission had put several restrictions in place to ensure free and fair polls in the state.
Incessant rains and a soggy weather made the voting process sluggish in the early hours. The voter turn out was higher in rural areas as compared to urban centres.
The restrictions imposed by the EC included setting up of polling booths by political parties at least 200 metres away from the polling stations set up by the Commission, and that too, without any paraphernalia and hullabaloo of supporters, party flags and buntings.
Poll officials at many poll stations were not insisting on seeing the Electoral Photo Identity Cards (EPICs) of the voters.
Even though some voters, whose names were missing from the electoral rolls produced the cards, they were not allowed to cast their right.
The EC had earlier said that no voting would be allowed without EPIC cards.
