| Police review security following resignation spree of Panchs, Sarpanchs | | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Nov 7: Following the announcement of the Government of India and that of Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah, that it was not possible to provide security cover to all panchs and sarpanchs over five dozen members of the Panchayat committees are said to have submitted their resignation. These Panchs and Sarpanchs have resigned only because of growing threat to their lives. Reports said that Panchayat representatives in Kashmir continue their 'resignation' spree through advertisements in local newspapers, days after Hizbul Mujahideen chief Syed Salahuddin issued a fresh warning to them urging them to quit or face dire consequences. Around 60 Panchs and Sarpanchs have made their resignations public through paid advertisements in various local dailies here citing threat to their life as the reason for the resignations. The fresh resignations through paid advertisements have taken the total to nearly 800. However, authorities maintain that they have received only 50 resignations since the landmark elections were held last year after a gap of nearly three decades. In the context of this development the state police in coordination with various security agencies have started 'threat perception assessment' of Sarpanchs and Panchs across the state. Official sources said that before a plan was formulated for securing lives of Panchs and Sarpanchs the police thought it advisable to assess the level of threat perception because of the magnitude of the problem when he Government had to think of safety of around 4,000 Sarpanchs and 29,000 Panchs across Jammu and Kashmir. The threat perception exercise was to be carried out under the supervision of Senior Superintendents of Police of each district. On ground the perception has to be assessed by the Station House Officers (SHOs) in their areas of jurisdiction. Official sources said that Pro-Pak elements were trying to sabotage the democratic activity by ensuring that more than 75 percent sarpanchs and panchs resigned which would subvert their purpose of seeing the Panchayat poll process wrecked. This was being done to silence those who had been claiming that majority of people in the state were opposed to the gun culture and favoured peaceful electoral process for strengthening the democratic structure in the state. |
