| Employees' pen-down strike continues | | JCC leaders address employees, meet to decide future programme | |

Jammu /Srinagar, Nov 7 : The pen-down strike called for by the employees Joint Consultative Committee (JCC) to press for their demands continued for the second consecutive day today affecting normal work in offices across the state. Employees in most of the offices in Srinagar and Jammu cities apart from other districts abstained from work to protest for their demands which include increase in retirement age from 58 to 60 years, payment of sixth pay commission arrears and regularisation of daily wage and casual labourers. Meanwhile, hundreds of employees today protested against the government's alleged backtracking from its promises and agreements with the employee's trade unions. JCC leaders, Mohammad Khurshid Alam, Abdul Qayoom Wani, Abdul Gafoor Dar and Kulwant Singh along with others addressed dozens of employees at different places in Jammu today. Protests were also held in Srinagar, where different leaders addressed the gatherings protesting for fulfilment of their demands. JCC leader Muzafar Ganie, lead a protest in Pulwama after addressing dozens of employees. Similar sits ins and protests were also reported from Baramulla, Kupwara, Anantnag and Shopian. Meanwhile, the employees trade union apex body (JCC) leaders met in Jammu this afternoon to decide the future course of action in the backdrop of non-fulfillment of demands by the government. The meeting was attended by around 70 leaders of different employees' trade union including Muhammad Khurshid Alam, Abdul Qayoom Wani and Abdul Gafoor Dar. Sources told KNS that the leaders during the four hour long meeting decided to launch another round of agitation from 8th to 10th of November in order to press for their demands. "A fresh programme of protest has been framed under which it has been decided that the JCC will call for pen-down strike on November 8,9 and 10 apart from Civil Secretariat Gherao on these dates in Jammu. Employees in Srinagar will be marching towards the Divisional Commissioner's Office and protest demonstrations will be held at different district headquarters", sources told KNS. Pertinently, while talking to KNS, the JCC leaders had not ruled out an indefinite strike, if the government did not implement its agreements with the employees' trade unions. Meanwhile, JCC leaders Abdul Qayoom Wani and Abdul Gafoor Dar refused to divulge any details about the fresh protest programme. "We are holding a press conference tomorrow at the Jammu Press club to announce our future programme", Wani told KNS over phone. Wani said the employees will continue their agitation until all of their demands are met by the state government. "The government is in deep slumbers and needs to be awakened. We will continue to protest till our demands are met. They (authorities) are pushing us towards extreme steps of agitation", Wani said. (KNS) |
