Protest against custodial killing of youth, five cops suspended

Eleven persons, including five police officials, were injured in police –public clashes in border district Rajouri today. The people were protesting against the killing of a youth in police custody at police station Rajouri last night. Five police cops including a Head Constable have been placed under suspension pending further inquiry.
Police used tear smoke to disperse the unruly crowed, who damaged nearly half a dozen government vehicles.
According to the reports, last night a police party from police station Rajouri picked up a youth identified as 24 year Showket Ahmed son of Mohammed Latief from Chapprian area in the vicinity of town in connection with a theft case in the same locality. The boy was picked up at about 9 pm from his house by a police party led by HC Gian Chand and brought to police station, where he was given third degree torture by the cops. At about 2 am, the boy collapsed and died in the police station due to the torture, family members allege. Soon after, the boy collapsed, he was shifted to hospital where the doctors declared him as brought dead.
As the news of the custodial killing of boy in police station spread in the town on wee hours today, the people came on streets and started raising slogans against the police besides pelting stones on vehicles. Within an hour, the mob swelled more than one thousand and started damaging government properties and pelting the cops on duty with stones in which at least five cops got injured and number of vehicles damaged. Police used tear smoke to mild lathi charge to disperse the protestors resulting injuries to about half a dozen of them.
In the meantime a special team of doctors who conducted the post-mortem of the deceased refused to comment over their findings
Meanwhile, SSP Rajouri Farooq Ahmed Khan has ordered the suspension of five cops including SHO police station Showket Ahmed Malik with immediate and assured investigation in the case.
All political parties and several social organizations have condemning the incident have demanded immediate arrest of the culprits and grant of adequate compensation to the deceased family.
Those who condemned the brutal killing included Kuldip Raj Gupta of BJP, YNC leader Shafqat Mir, Advocate Vibodh Gupta, Rajouri Beopar Mandal President Rajesh Gupta and BJP youth leader Pushpinder Gupta.
