| Strike throws life out of gear in valley | | | SRINAGAR, FEB 16 The normal life in the Kashmir valley came to a standstill today following the strike called by the militant outfit, Jamiatul Mujahideen against the reported Israeli plans to demolish the Al Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem.
Protest demonstrations were held at many places including the Dalgate and Khanqah-e-moalla areas of the city to protest the move.
People's Political Party also carried out a protest rally in this connection.
Shops and other business establishments remained closed in most parts of the valley while the roads and streets in the commercial hub of Lal Chowk and adjoining areas wore a deserted look due to the strike.
The effect of the strike was accentuated by the public holiday on account of Mahashivratri as offices and educational institutions remained closed while the skeletal transport service caused hardships to the commuters.
Meanwhile, a group of protestors pelted stones on police personnel at Nowhatta and Gojwara areas of the city immediately after Friday prayers, official sources said.
Police had to fire tear smoke shells and rubber bullets to chase away the protestors. However, intermittent clashes between police and protestors were continuing till last reports came in, they said.
Although police officials said there was no report of injuries in the skirmishes, unofficial reports said at least a dozen people, including some policemen, suffered minor injuries during the stone-pelting and retaliatory action by police.
