| UPA Govt's measures to check inflation are "too late and too little": BJP | | | New Delhi | Feb 16 The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) today pooh-poohed the UPA Government's decision to bring down petrol and diesel prices by two and one rupee, respectively, by saying that the "measures taken by the Centre to check the rising inflation are inadequate". Describing the measure as "too late and too little", party spokesman Prakash Javdekar said that political expediency was "no substitute" for sound economics. He said that the recent measures would confound the situation further, as in a hot economy "emotion is also an important component". Party spokesman Prakash Javdekar said that the main Opposition party – the BJP – had been demanding the roll back in fuel prices for the past four months, "but the Centre didn’t pay to our demand during the past four months. It is being said that the roll back was brought into effect at the intervention of Congress president and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi. We want to ask why didn’t she ask the Government to do the same during the past four months." Targeting Union Commerce Minister Kamal Nath for the rising prices of essential commodities, Javdekar said that after wasting much time, while the poor people continued to bear the inflation, "it is now an agreement has been reached with Burma to import pulses".
Describing Union Agriculture Sharad Pawar as "Cricket Minister", for his too much involvement in both and international cricket affairs, the BJP spokesman said, "Mr Pawar has absolutely no idea about the rising prices of essential commodities". He advised the Centre to form a body who would check inflation on a regular basis, and continuously suggest the Centre on measures to check rising prices. He recalled the days of BJP-led NDA regime when a Group of Ministers (GoM) was formed and it used to meet every fortnight to take stock of inflation. On the occasion, the Opposition party's spokesman also demanded of the Government to ban speculative trading forthwith, and strengthening and expanding of the coverage of PDS to include pulses and vegetables oil.
