| Pak mulling import of Indian lint cotton via Wagha Border | | | Islamabad | Feb 16 The Pakistan government is reportedly mulling over importing bulk lint cotton from India through the Wagha Border, a senior Pakistan government official said.
According to him, if the Pakistan government gives green signal for the import, it would be first time in the history of Pakistan (that lint cotton was imported from India).
"Some days ago, All Pakistan Textile Mills Association (APTMA) has placed its formal request with the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock (MINFAL) seeking permission to import two million bales from India through Wagha border," The News quoted the official as saying.
He confirmed that his ministry had received a written request from the Association to this effect and the government was considering convening a meeting of all stakeholders from the sector.
The lint import is allowed under the import policy, but only through seaport, as the quarantine and fumigation facilities were available at Karachi port while the remaining entry points at the borders are not established with these facilities, the official added.
APTMA is intending to import nearly two million bales from India if the MINFAL allowed saying the imported Indian lint is superior in quality and also much lower in price. MINFAL has allowed 3,000 bales, imported by three textile mills from Punjab as one-time permission to the APTMA from India.
