| Consumers should not suffer for want of timber: Qazi | | | JAMMU, February 17 During the year 2006-07, 1.86 lakh cubic feet timber has been provided to the consumers of the state on concessional rates through various sale depots of State Forest Corporation (SFC) whereas 3 lakh cfts have been sanctioned for the consumers by the corporation. This was stated by the Minister For Forests, Environment, Housing and Urban Development Qazi Mohammad Afzal at a review meeting of State Forest Corporation and Forest Department at Jammu today. The meeting was told that the corporation made 16.50 lakh cfts of timber available in its depots by ending January, this year against a total target of 25 lakh cfts for the year 2006-07. The meeting was told that State Forest Corporation has earned revenue of Rs.75 crore so far by way of sale of the timber other forest and produce the target fixed for the year 2006-07 is Rs.106 crore. It was informed in the meeting that SFC has fixed a target of extracting 30 lakh cfts timber during the current financial year out of which 22.27 lakh cfts have been extracted and 20.46 lakh cfts have been transported to the depots of the corporation for dumping and sale. Addressing the meeting, Qazi Afzal asked the officers to ensure timely provision of timber to the consumers and also check smuggling of forests wealth. He said that the delay in providing the timber to the needy encourages smuggling of the timber. He asked the officers of SFC and Forest Department to be in close coordination for effective implementation of forests protection laws, checking, deforestation and promoting aforestation in the state. Qazi Afzal said that the corporation should come up to the expectations of the people of the state and should not make the consumers to suffer for want of timber for construction purposes. Secretary, Forests, Mr. Attal Duloo, Managing Director, J&K State Forest Corporation Mr. Ayjaz Ahmed Khan, Chief Conservator Forests, Jammu Mr. Abhay Kumar and other senior officers of the State Forest Corporation and Forest Department attended the meeting.
